    The racecourse actually have very few race meetings a year, in fact I think only two. The October date isn’t one I’ve seen before so probably caught us unawares. The racecourse puts on loads of other events during the year and it does sometimes cause problems for passengers accessing the GWSR carpark. A recent classic car event saw us having to leave passengers for a later service as there were just too many still trying to get through the race course site. Not ideal but considering it’s only the larger events that cause problems and they are less often it’s something we work around.

    I've lived in Cheltenham for 24 years, and apart from last year there has been a weekend meet in October every year. Usually meets in October, November, December, New Year, January, the festival, and May.

    The October meeting is 23/24th this year but previous years it has been the last weekend in Oct so maybe that is what has caught people out?

    As you say meetings Oct, Nov, mid Dec, New Year, End of Jan, the festival in March, mid April and then end of the season on the turn of April/May. Most are weekend, it isn't a course that has a lot of midweek meetings. It is no Southwell or Lingfield.

    Very interesting; thanks for posting that.

    "Following the DfT's block on transferring the land to GSWR, at the suggestion of DfT, [Railway Paths] have today written to the CEO of Worcestershire County Council to offer WCC the route for £1. (The DfT don't want the land returned to them.)"

    The recently posted GWSR press release on this subject doesn't mention the WCC at all, but hopefully the WCC will take up RP's offer, and the GWSR will stay 'in the loop' with the WCC on plans for that section of the trackbed.

    Serious point;
    Wonder if it would be worth a separate group doing a quick bit of fundraising for a 'Honeybourne Bridges Fund'?
    A donation to WCC could show that people have an interest in the line remaining available for future use.
    (I'm aware that the long-term works required are in the £100,000s, a donation might be a useful nudge)

    Since we have heard nothing from GWSR about this, and even Flying Scotsman Alex (how could he on a GWR line?) is silent, one might hopefully assume that the GWSR board are beavering away in the background working to secure an arrangement with Worcester CC and that GWSR operatives are under instruction to stay silent until such time as an arrangement emerges. No doubt, as always, time will tell.

    Chaps, here's a question for the eggheads of NatPres:

    Our drainage team is proposing to replace our missing GWR mile posts, and substitute correct GWR pattern ones for the sheet metal ones that can be found in some locations along our line. We have a number of correct pattern heads and numerals.

    What we are missing is the specifications of the mounting on the lengths
    of bridge rail. How long should the bridge rail be, and at what distance
    from the running line? Also we believe that to aid observation from the
    footplate the posts are mounted slightly off vertical away from the
    track. Is there anything that states what the angle should be?

    Does anyone have a drawing of the mile posts and heads?

    I enjoyed a very good day at the GWRly yesterday . Steam locos in service were 35005 and Foremarke Hall. The trains were very busy but I managed to find a seat on all services.

    The last train to arrive at Cheltenham was hauled by a class 47 diesel in BR blue. It was immaculate.

    Well done to all at the railway. You have a superb railway to be proud of. <BJ>

    Sorry but I can't help with your question. However I have two comments that I hope you will find helpful.

    In a railway of many strengths the quality of your mileposts is rather a weakness.
    According to the RPS database MP 5 and MP 5¼ are each about three chains too far away from Broadway.

    Thanks Al. I eventually found a drawing in the GWR architecture book, which I passed on to the team. They are now reviewing all the mile posts, with a view to fitting correct heads, and bridge rail posts, where not in situ. There's a little report on their project here:

    The second pictures shows some lengths of bridge rail they have salvaged for their project. I rescued two such lengths at Broadway in 2015, after they had been put in a skip - about the same time that they skipped the rescued slate fireplace surround, and the two slate urinal dividers, both ripped out of Toddington earlier. It's taken about 6 years, but the retrieved posts will now find a use.

    I didn't know about the two Broadway mile posts, but will pass on your comment. I think they are on a stretch of embankment that was regraded, removing one trackbed, and then soil nailed, so the mile posts would have been removed at the time. I recall seeing one being put back by our digger driver, using a pinewood post. I said (half-) in jest that the post should have been a bridge rail one, but that was seen as pushing my luck.
