    Hello everyone,

I hope I am posting this in the right section of the forum.

The Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Museum, registered Charity (CIO) number 1191551, for which I am a Trustee have been offered 1949 built Leyland Tiger PS1/1 with Lydney (Gloucestershire) body EU 9722 that was built new for Griffin of Brynmawr and later transferred to Red and White Services Limited.

The museum have been offered EU 9722 for the sum of £2,000 and we are currently fundraising for its purchase as we are a relatively new organisation being set up in 2016 and being granted Charity status in Sept 2020.

I hope it is ok to post a link to our fundraiser here, you can also find more information about the bus and our plans here: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/leyland-tigerlydney-eu-9722-mabel

    Thank you all very kindly.

What's the connection between the bus and the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon company?

None whatsoever that I can see, though it could be deemed to be "Local" to Gloucester as the vehicle bodybuilder was based in Lydney - not that they actually operated as such very long - something like 1947 to 1952 - but I'm not too sure how many Lydney bodies survive on preserved vehicles TBH.
Their museum project appears to be currently based at the Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway, which is even further away from Gloucester.......though I didn't know they had this -

EDIT ; The vehicle appears to be owned by the Cardiff Transport Preservation Group at the moment.

There is no direct link or connection between the bus or the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company, although there are some none-direct links, these are as follows:

    1. The Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company manufactured/bodied at least 61 buses/coaches from the 1920’s to the 1930’s including at least one Leyland vehicle (Coach).

    2. Further to the above point 1, out of the 61 vehicles, the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company bodied 20 buses/coaches for use within South Wales, including the former Lydney, Gloucestershire based company “Red and White Services Ltd.” in 1929 who moved there operations to Chepstow in the 1930’s. Red and White Services operated buses and coaches in Gloucester, Hereford and South Wales.

    3. Lydney was home to an outpost of the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company’s wagon repairs facilities.

    4. EU 9722 is an ex-Griffin bus that served with Red and White Services. Close links between Red and White Services and the Griffin Motor Company, Brynmawr in the early 1920’s.

    5. Red and White Services operated buses as far as Llanelly (i) in West Wales.

I hope this helps with a little breakdown of information, there are more links and connections which are currently being looked into.

As stated in another reply on this matter, there is no direct links between both the bus or Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company but there are a number of none-direct links between them. Please see above reply posted a 8 minutes ago.

you are correct that the museum itself is based at the Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway but we still have a correspondence address in Gloucester which is also our registered address. It is only the physical museum and collection that is based at the railway. Two of our Trustees are located in Wales and attend the railway regularly. We are looking for a home in Gloucestershire which is also our long-term goal but at the current moment in time this isn’t viable for many reasons.

We have been donated Cadbury No.14 as you rightly mentioned in your post which will be being relocated in due course.

The bus will not only be a static exhibit but will also be a working exhibit and one that we plan to use as a shuttle bus from the mainline railway station in Llanelli to the railway, a total of 5.5 miles.

Hope this helps, please do not hesitate to ask any further questions or enquires.

    Thank you.
