Far more suitable for a branch line, where 6233 looks out of place.

6233 has been five times before anyway.... its bound to visit many more times in the future.

4953 has been once albeit on mainline shuttles with 4936 in the 2007 Autumn Gala from Bewdley to Birmingham Snow Hill. Not sure if it didnt go further north then that due to storm damage so one could classify 4953 as a first time visitor...?

More to the point it's a GWR loco for a GWR line! Very happy with the lineup for this gala.

It only worked as far as Bewdley due to the flood damage.

Can't say I'm disappointed with the substitution (6233 is like a caged lion on the SVR), however, I hope whatever the delay is isn't serious as booked behind it on the 9th October with Vintage Trains.

Probably not any less than the Duchess which has visited regularly over the last 20 years - gala regulars will have seen it many times.

I know what I’d rather see on the LMS set! :) Although saying that 4953 would look rather nice on a rake of ‘blood and custard’ Mk1’s or one of the GW rakes.
Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a charter involving either? Oh wait :(

I totally agree with Paul42. Although the Duchess is an admirable loco, one I much admire, it just looks too big for The Valley. I thought the same about Sir Keith Park when that was running regularly on the line, an excellent loco but out of scale. Halls just look right, but still, big locos are hired in to bring in the crowds, so what do I know!;)

A summer Saturday in the 1950s. A Bullied light pacific hauling 10 coaches, double-headed , running on single track.
Out of scale? Not at all. Welcome to the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway. ;) <BJ>

Yep, you're right, as far as the S&D is concerned, but it was designed and laid out as a main line whereas the SVR always was a backwater country branch line, so the bigger locos do look out of scale on it.

A heads up to anyone who ordered the Souvenir Brochure. They expect you to collect it when you go, like most other lines.
If like me you cancelled and they refunded your booking for the trains when the reservations were scrapped, but kept the Brochure order, you will need to ring the office and request it to be sent to you.

The late change in loco meant much burning of midnight oil on production of the brochure (I hear), which probably scuppered any distribution plans

Thank's Maureen for your well-reasoned reply. Sadly, it's precisely that sort of response that usually dissuades me from posting on here.

Thank you, yes that sort of response dissuades me from posting too. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but everyone else is entitled to theirs too be it agree or disagree with what someone said.
