This looks like another day in the life of trying to operate steam in the north-west over the S&C and Shap.

The combination of the time of year, weather, gradient, load and locomotive can produce a brilliant spectacle but it can also create your worst nightmare. Still, if you do it enough times you come to learn what to try and not to try. But today seems to have been a curveball.

    Commiserations to all.

It's a nice sunny day and all the passengers have been kept up to date on the situation, so no complaints so far. Hopefully we should be able to leave Csrlisle not to far from due time and then recover more time on the way back.

Could be interesting if 35018 is in charge of the Lune Rivers next Saturday as last year it came to grief a few times before Hellifield .

Not sure why you are offering commiserations, we are back at Hellifield on time, it's still a beautiful day, passengers and the loco were fed and watered in time for us to depart Carlisle only a few minutes late and as far as I am aware no complaints.

    That's a daft comment.

It needed West Coast to send out a diesel plus crew to help the train onwards to Carlisle. Passengers ended up with half the planned time in Carlisle on a nice day when maybe the extra time would have been welcomed.. Those are two reasons for offering some sympathy. My guess is that the turn around also had to be done rather more quickly than preferred but as you weren't servicing the loco I presume that wouldn't be your concern.

The good thing is the speedy manner with which West Coast found a solution. That's the massive advantage of having something local when needed. Imagine a similar problem with a DB charter, for example, where the nearest diesel would be.....? Answers on a postcard.

Fantastic to see some great pictures and videos.
Very disheartening to see people being critical.

Nice clips. Thanks. So the stall at Gisburn Cotes was aggravated by no available sand. Given that this is a regular route I couldn't make out what the problem was until the video.
