Going off topic again just for a second. Parry People Movers did indeed demonstrate their vehicle on the F&WHR. I don't think the F&WHR ever had any real interest in purchasing such a vehicle. They just used the railway as a test track for a prospective tramway in Llandudno. They basically only had one vehicle but every time a new prospective customer came along they would modify it a bit, and give it a coat of paint and a new number.

It was tested on the Cob where it could just about make it all the way across. Then it went away and was dressed up to look a bit more like a tram. It came back for a stint on the WHR. You're straight onto a 1 in 60 off the end of Caernarfon platform and then it is uphill all the way to Dinas. I was told that you didn't get very far before you had the stop and spin the flywheel up again.

Both flywheel energy storage and batteries have changed quite a lot in the 20 years since that happened.

It visited the W&L in 1994 and ran on a short newly laid track into the car park at Welshpool as well as the aforementioned test runs up Golfa. Given this was nearly 30 years ago and that the class 139’s have been successfully running on the Stourbridge branch for a number of years, I suspect the technology has advanced. Whether a modern PPM would manage Golfa bank (or similar) will probably never be known however.

Back once again to actual Corris happenings. Number 7 has arrived okay at Tywyn ahead of the TR's Gala next weekend when we'll see how she goes this time post overhaul and the Statfold work. The Corris services on Sunday will be worked by a diesel.

TR number 4 has gone back and CR number 7 is now over at the TR, it's really good to see the CR and TR working together on a freindly basis as it is, that can only be to the profit of both railways.

Mention was made, on one of the clips, of No.7 receiving some "fettling" during it's latest trip to Tywyn. As this was the loco's first visit to the sister line since being 'breathed upon' at Statfold, has there been time to form an impression of the improvements since it's last visit? How does it now compare with it's elder sibling? It certainly looked and sounded the part, on the solo trip up the TR I saw.

One thing on a (TR) clip I watched stood out. The comparison with Stanhope was fascinating, being the first time I'd heard the differences between 'Tattoo' and 'Tattoo Special' listed. I'm guessing it was experience with No.4 which dictated No.7's loco style motion, in lieu of the original 'marine' coupling and connecting rods, as still featured on the 'standard' 2ft gauge loco.

It was pleasing to see the Corris event's prominent mention of Mr Campbell Thomas' role in the survival of Nos.3&4. One shudders to think how differently things might've panned out, for our whole movement, had that gentleman's actions not kept the scrap men at bay for 21/2 vital years. Who says one man can't make a difference?

The beefier connecting and coupling rods on No 4 were instigated by John Bate to improve the bearings. The same was done to No 6 Douglas. I think the marine pattern rods from No 4 are now on Stanhope.
What wasn't pointed out about the KS "special" design for No 4 was the use of inside frames - a feature of the standard Tattoo design that came at 2ft 6in gauge and over, hence why Stanhope has outside frames. The tight Corris structure gauge precluded the use of outside frames as the cylinders would be too wide..

Sorry Pat that it has taken four weeks to get the info but there is no 'orrible conspiracy involved. The contractors building the new Dyfi bridge found they had a use for the material themselves and so on this occasion the CR wasn't able to get any more supplies from there. Dolgellau material is still coming in.

I downloaded the .pdf on the new A487 Dyfi Bridge, which is quite a bit closer to the old CR structure (the remains of which currently host a footbridge) than to the present, completely inadequate (if quaint) road bridge and from which I learned 'detrunking'* is apparently now a word.

Aside from the obvious observation it'll make life much easier for local residents and motorists alike, does it have any direct implications for future CR plans?

For any interested, here's the url from which to download project info:
    https://gov.wales/a487-new-dyfi-bridge-overview

    * I'll save you the trouble .... it scores 16 without any double letter or word squares.:)

There is a new selection of photos on the Corris website this evening including a big chunky part for new build number 10 These show volunteer progress on the cab and the sub - assemblies shown are ready to go to Alan Keef Ltd for trial fitting and further work. One also shows the hinged section of the cabside to help with coaling the loco.

There has been a lot of progress with the new build engine so far this year and the target date to for steaming remains autumn of next year. However the bank balance for the project has been shrinking quickly as this progress continues and donations will be more than welcome. They can be made via the Falcon Locomotive section of the website where there is also a list of future items to sponsor. Thanks for any help

I always look forward to the updates from Corris. Cheers for the heads up. :)

Enquiry: Will work on the layout at Corris occur either side of Santa season, or after?

That depends on the rain, dear...:D

Looking good. I hope that plastic is recycled. How does 40 years compare to timber?

The Corris station work will start after the Santa Train operations. No doubt pictures will appear on the website as they go ahead.

Another heads up. Yesterday, October 14th, the cab for number 10, plus some other volunteer built components were taken to Alan Keef's and the cab was trial fitted by paid staff and CRS vollunteers. Pics on the website this evening.

There has been a flurry of new stuff on the Corris website. More pictures from both Alan Keef’s and the Railway and a newly loaded video from Richard Shipman. Plus a t.v. programme to be shown in Wales or via BBC Iplayer next week.
