I had an enjoyable trip last week to York. There’s a lot there, including freight wagons and descriptions of private sidings and transshipment etc.

From a steam perspective Bauxite No. 2 is on display in the main hall to represent industrials but it struck me that there’s no industrial diesel shunter. Looking at the collection there’s the following:

Motor Rail petrol mechanical 4 wheeler no. 4217 of 1925 at Shildon

Armstrong Whitworth diesel electric 0-4-0 No. D21 of 1933 ‘Hexhamshire’ at Tanfield

It might be that a wafer thin 0-4-0 is the Mr Creosote moment, but it does seem to me to be a reasonably significant omission from the story at York

(Actually, a bogie hopper and container flat wouldn’t go amiss either!)

It’s always what you leave off display instead, of course, and that’s a different discussion

I think it's spent its entire NRM existence there, I seem to recall it came straight from industrial use to Shildon a number of years ago.

Thanks, I thought I saw a cut down container but not a flat. Difficult I know but freight is a line of vehicles at the back of the ‘station’, a small exhibition in the main hall, Bauxite separate and some at Shildon and the car park. There’ll never be space to group them thematically but I wonder whether it would be possible to incorporate better ‘signposting’. Not a complaint, just an out loud thought

Isn't the Container on the Flat one of the 2 existing Container Guards Cabins?
The other is at the NYMR in the PW Yard.
