    Just got this from RTC

With regards to your booking on our Tin Bath tour on Sunday 24th October we are writing to inform you of a change to the route for this tour.
Due to a major engineering blockade over the Calder Valley and Copy Pit route we have had no option but to reroute this train. The train will now run from Preston, Wigan and Manchester Victoria via the Hope Valley line to Sheffield and then on to Chesterfield and Derby.
As this train is no longer taking our usual Tin Bath route, we have renamed the tour The Peaks Express. Passengers will have the option to disembark at Chesterfield and spend a couple of hours there or remain on the train throughout

Shame, as the route was the point of us booking. We have just done Hope Valley with 60163. However, with hotels all set up and travelling with mates we shall still be going.

Change of route with three weeks + notice, that's pretty good for NR planning at the moment, be glad it wasn't 3 days.

Sigh, it's defend my former employers time again .....

If the train wasn't bid in agreed timescales ( 14 weeks before operation?) the bid will have had to wait until after the engineering lockdown on changes at 7 weeks out and then bids are taken in the order received. By the way, there is only a small team of train planners in Network Rail who process charter trains and often help out with "one off" workings like test trains.

There is an agreed system and it appears to have been followed. Incidentally the Rochdale to Hall Royd Jn possession was agreed months ago in the Engineering Access Statement, which is available on the NWR web site.

    Cheers, Neil

When I was in Renewals, Possession requests and Ballast rain bookings had to be done 52 weeks out.
Further up the planning tree, critical resources had to be planned 3 years out.
Other details were known even further out.
With the initial request for a renewal around 10 years before the job.

At the moment the finishing touches are being put to the 2023 Engineering Access Statement - version 1, ready for consultation with Freight and Passenger operators in November/December. As Ploughman states it takes a long time to get the plan developed. EAS 2023 will cover Mid December 2022 to Mid December 2023. Cross route conflicts need to be resolved about 3 years out as well. It creates a bad press if both the South Western and Great Western routes are blocked to Exeter on the same day! ( It also screws up getting material trains on and off site.)

    Cheers, Neil

I’m booked on it. Looking forward to ticking off the lines through Darnall, Alfreton, Long Eaton and the northbound climb of Dronfield with steam.

For me, there's the route via Darnall/Woodhouse and Dore South-West Junctions to tick off, while you never quite know what will happen around Manchester (missed the run through Reddish North a few years ago, so I live in hope for a Philips Park-Ashburys-Romiley Junction one day). May well book this.

I think most of the steam tour brigade would agree. However having just read the outrage on wnxx over a BLS tour today that has some track not being covered possibly because of Saphos not wanting their stock trashed by vegetation growth, a 47 instead of a second Class 40 and horror no alcohol, we all seem quite restrained.
All seemed like normal railtour issues to me, but what do I know.
