Don't tell anyone, but I always fancied the notion of using a couple of Bulleid chassis to create an Air-Smoothed Garratt*. The Kiwis did it the other way round, so it ought to be possible. The current speed record for any Garratt stands at a shade over 87mph (set in France when testing an Algerian passenger Garratt, ahead of delivery).

Any idea who might have some 7'-6" dia flanging blocks?

*before anyone goes asking the obvious sensible question, just "because" .... ok? :D

You can have as many Bullied Pacifics as you like to trade as that will leave all the Bulleid Pacifics in place. :)

You'd think the only time there would have been a mass scrapping like that would be after a major electrification project, so I would have thought it was 1920s or 1930s.

It’s Edwardian. They are awaiting space at Brighton for repair, Brighton being chronically unable to keep up with the repair backlog meaning locos awaiting repair had to be stored at country stations until space was available. Horsted Keynes was one of the main sites for such storage.

A situation which, if not actually responsible for Robert Billinton's death in office, certainly did nothing to help the ailing Locomotive, Carriage, Wagon and Marine Superintendent's health and persisted until the green field facility at Lancing C&W came on stream, in 1911. Anything seen lurking around any of several Wealden locations after grouping really was bound for the knacker's yard. After R.Billinton's demise, the marine responsibility was separated from the onshore role.

Further west, after 1911, stations on the Steyning line often played host to stock awaiting the call into Lancing for some tlc.

I'd send back a GWR King, 2 Castles and 1 Hall and 1 28xx, and replace with The Great Bear, an LNER P1, a Patriot, a Midland Johnson 3F and 46256 Sir William Stanier F.R.S.

Love Jubilees but would be quite happy to send one (and/or a Hall) back to get the Duchess Mk2 mentioned above
Send the pacers back for a Midland 2p 4 -4 -0 = fair swop, both crap but both 'have a place'.

My LBSC friend tells me the engines stored at HK were for scrapping at Redhill, but Redhill didn't have enough siding space.

A Webb compound would be a far more interesting loco to have in the flesh than most of those suggested, and most new builds!
For performance, it should be a Benbow, but for looks (striking as well as beautiful) I'd go for a Dreadnaught.
We could at least find out how much of their reputation was bad design and how much bad press...

I don’t think there was ever much question about the construction quality of Webb locos, was there? And I think Crewe were quite advanced by contemporary standards in, for example, the move from iron to steel.

The big question with Webb locos is far more about the fundamental design - was it good or not - and not about details you’d tweak with modern design methods?
