Another piece of the jigsaw arrived today - our Sturgeon wagon, which has travelled up from Dartmoor. This will be used to carry the 58 chassis while modifications are made, ready to fit it to our EM2 bogies. Thanks to Tony Ellershaw for being at Wirksworth to receive the wagon, Allelys for being excellent as always, and a big thank you to the Society member who funded the purchase!

We are about to begin our Rolling Chassis Fund - to raise £180,000 to create 10000's rolling chassis including refurbishment of the traction motors. It will be a giant step forward.

Sorry @Ploughman , I forgot to reply to your message. It looks like TAS are more in the business of metal fabrication

A productive weekend at Centenary Works despite the weather. We have had problems with damp in the pit, so today Hanson fitted some open flooring which will hopefully solve the problem. While that was going on, Phil and Tony managed to finish removing all the radiator elements from one side. There are just a few left to do on the other side now. As you can see, our 58 still has coal in the radiator! These are some of the nuts that were holding the radiator elements on, with a complete one for comparison. There is no space to use a chisel or a grinder, so Phil and Tony purchased a set of special sockets that did the trick. All the elements are now out and stored away.

Drew made a start on working out the boiler control boxes, what can be kept, and what will need replacing. We also managed to get the A frame lifting beam in place - once this is tested it will be a very useful piece of kit, which can lift up to 3 tonnes and can be moved to cover almost any point in the workshop. Our four sleeper compartments are full tonight have been in good use this weekend!

Those special sockets are impressive! I assume they have a tightening action on the corroded nuts as they rotate to unscrew?

This weekends working party has seen progress removing more components from 58022 along with three buckets of rust! Here is a rare picture of the electrical cabinet, whilst Mark removes a small air tank and Bernard fights the traction motor blower mounting.

Donors who give £10,000 or more receive a copy of Mark Langley's painting of the twins on Shap. Here we see the artist with our President Stan Fletcher this weekend.

Another very positive agm yesterday. With all major components now available including two steam heating boilers, and recently some stainless steel air tanks, the main task now will be on the 58 chassis. The one traction motor gearcasing that has been removed showed the gearing to be in excellent condition, which will save £ks.

Is the 58 gearing correct for the D16/1?

Are you not using the ex-Dutch bogies and motors as they came?

Yes sorry if I implied they were using the 58 bogies, not so, I was talking about the EM2 bogies. They hope to get some more traction motors from the 1501 Group in Holland.

We will indeed be using the type of traction motors fitted to the EM2 bogies.

It'd make a nice shed for someone's garden. Space and cash mean it won't be mine though.
