Supposed they haven't thought about booking 6233 'Duchess Of Sutherland' for their spring gala yet?

It is a rather BIG royal event in 2022.

Wasn't it out of gauge for the NR bit from Woking to Alton? What other engines are there with Royal connections I can think of Royal Scot, but thats about all.

6201 springs to mind! ;) A jubilee would fit the bill too.

I wonder what does fit on the line down to Alton now? Last I heard some years ago was that there was a significant problem with gauging in the tunnel at Aldershot which stopped the most recent planned visits of 6024 for a steam Gala and a Class 40 for a diesel Gala. Not sure if it also ruled out Deltics. IIRC 4953 visited in the place of 6024 in 2011.

6201 would be nice but the boiler requires a lot of work before she can steam again not to mention the funds to pay for the work. A black or green Jubilee would be great.

Why stop there? Why not just post every last locomotive in the entire country? Screw it, let’s just hope every locomotive in the northern hemisphere turns up.

Or we can do the sensible thing and just let the Hants do their own thing rather than just posting in every thread about every last gala you can possibly think about. I thought the continual moaning about diesels on the back was tiresome...

Am I the only one feeling confused? How did we get on to silly loco names?

I actually went to the Furness loco that went into the mine and assumed it had been renamed for a Russian king/ members of his family * ducks *

Which, of course, is why railwaymen use numbers, not names. (And let's not forget Mr. Maunsell's comment about the naming of the N15's: "Call them what you like, they won't run any faster.")

You may want to nip nack to the 1830s and tell that to Mr Brunel. ;)

If I nipped back to the 1830's and met IKB I would probably tell him to check his tape measure!
Re: names - most (i.e. normal) railways found numbers necessary very quickly. Didn't stop some cracking names though. JH Beattie's naming always seemed to me most attractive, and I know that many of them were shared with other railways.
