Good to see you recognising McIntosh's brilliance. As you say it's a big gap from 419 down to the rest though. Let's hope the SECR doesn't embarrass itself against Drummond and Adams' efforts. It'll be good to see how the H does up against Dunrobin.

How many 0-4-4 tanks are there? Two M7s, H class, Caledonian, O2. Soon to be G5. Have I forgotten any?

    Yes, Dunrobin!

Going back to the GWR 455 tank, that could be black, one of two of them did run briefly for BR in 1948/9

Though not a 'Swindonite', I've always liked the idea of a 'Metro'. You have to suppose one would be just right for the C&PR. Bob alone which of the manifold variations!

In Denmark there was 12 LitraP designed by a mr Busse in 1882 and they were designed to run tender first and did most of the time.

They did a lot of work from 1882 until 1915-1951.

Same designer, locomotive Dictator designed and ordered 36 Litra O in 1895 and ran both ways until mid fifties

He could not make up his mind evidently.

If my experience of locomotives in preservation is anything to go by, McIntosh is sadly ill-remembered by 419.

Well he would be if you forget he was also responsible for 828 and the facsimile designs in Belgium.

We were talking of 0-4-4Ts, where I’ve had very positive experiences with the H and M7, but poor of 419. Sadly, I’ve yet to experience 828.

Thats my bad, its far too early. There was that period where 419 was on tour and put in some less than stellar performances.

What was the issue with 419? I've also heard that the H and M7 are good.

Thanks for those pictures. Several British railways had both 2-4-2T and 0-4-4T, depending on the preferences of different engineers. When Dugald Drummond was working in Scotland (1875-1890), he could not decide between the 0-4-4T and 4-4-0T - 3 designs for the North British Rly:

.... followed by a small 0-4-4T for the Caledonian Rly:

Just reading Martin Evans' book "From Inverness to Crewe", about the British 4-6-0... Now I have never really been enthused by things Great Western, but Dean's experimental 4-6-0 No. 36 does look a lovely machine. It was considered unsuccessful, but its proportions do look nice.

Am I the only one who thinks Blodge's 30 year habit of turning out new locos in temporary black garb makes for some lovely sights? DLG and Taliesin both looked very businesslike and the (fully lined out) "30192" was a particular delight.

We focus on standard gauge a lot in railway preservation but the remarkable engineering going on in Wales at a number of different railways should be remembered and highlighted far more. The FR's output of steam locomotives is a delight to see, Welsh Pony for me being the highlight of last year's lockdown work.

Unlikely candidate for a new build but with a replica of Moel Tryfan the FR would complete the lineup of Fairlies in this country.

It's funny how things that happen though circumstance are made out to be tradition.
The basic liveries on the FR usually come about because the loco coming out of overhaul was always desperately needed for the summer service, and there was no time to paint it properly.

Unfortunately when we tried it on Earl of Merioneth, it looked too much like an F117 and flew under the radar straight into a car at Boston Lodge crossing.
