Not, I suspect, 'unlikely' so much as 'on back burner' whilst Gowrie (which it seems shares a few commonalities with the non-bendy Russell) emerges from the shadows.

Looking at Yeadons Register of the A3 Class, you are correct in saying that mileages played no part in when locos of the Class had a general repair.
They were called into Doncaster approximately every eighteen months for a general repair. I assume that a similar figure was applied to the other LNER Pacific Classes.

When the Tal was first put together there was a faint-hearted argument that it was in fact a rebuild.....

The FR is one of those organisations that firmly believes that you should never throw anything away and "that will come in handy one day". When locos where considered no longer worth repairing (e.g. the original Tal dismantled in 1924) they were striped of anything remotely useful and these components disappeared into the stores at Boston Lodge. When the new Tal was being built, someone had a rummage in the stores and the reverser, its quadrant and, I believe, the regulator handle were extracted from the depths and incorporated into the loco. Since the loco was being built using some original components the theory was advanced that this process was actually a rebuild. As has been debated endlessly before - where does a rebuild end and a new build begin???? I dont think many actually took the suggestion seriously.

The process was repeated fairly recently when a number of parts from Welsh Pony that had been stashed away when it was put on its plinth were recovered and reunited with the rest of the loco as part of its rebuild.

It is noteworthy that the Aladdin's cave of Boston Lodge stores was of great interest to the HLF representatives when they visited as part of the application process for the recently announced grant and it remains to be seen if it is incorporated into the planned Boston Lodge tour as has been suggested.

The sanding handle and probably the reverser are off the original loco. The handbrake wheel is probably from Moel Tryfan. There are a few more parts in the stores including the toolbox and the chimney.

Yeadons register is in my view not reflective of how LNER locomotives were called into shops, giving no context for why locomotives went into shops.

The engine record cards at the NRM are a much better reflection.

Interesting thoughts. A few years ago I looked at the A3 record cards at the NRM. It was quite clear to me then that the Class were called into Doncaster for a General on a regular interval basis.

I’ve got copies of all of the cards here - I am happy to share my data and thoughts by email, off thread, if you like?

I didn't realise that my idea of rebuilding a 455 tank would become so popular.

    I guess sometimes it's good to preserve a little-un. :)

Horses for courses, eh? My own preference in locos has always been for smaller (as is my taste in pre-grouping railways), though even I'd concede a lower size limit for practical purposes. I just love the (extinct) Cowes & Newport 2-2-2WT design, but weighing in at under 20 tons, I couldn't imagine the IWSR having much use for one - mind you, there's at least one original C&N carriage in existence! :)

Pre-grouping is the funny one for me as I do prefer pre-SR engines (SECR, LBSCR, LSWR) to the Great Western, it's only under Collett's regime that I liked the GWR over the SR.

Can't beat a good bark from a Terrier can you? ;)

Not a new build, just a paint job needed. Two of the ex Gateshead Corporation trams that worked on the Grimsby & Immingham line with BR markings and number still exist.
Nineteen cars were sold to the Grimsby & Immingham Electric Railway. Two of these survived into preservation. No 5 is at the National Tramway Museum and No 10 is at the Beamish Museum.
A quick paint job and one of these could be "converted" to a BR machine. :)

No. 5 is still in green as far as I'm aware, and no. 10 last ran about 4 years ago in green.

No. 5 at Crich is in Gateshead livery - but Grimsby & Immingham No.14, which is also at Crich, is in BR Green.

    17-2194.jpg

Grimsby & Immingham No.26 is at Beamish and is still in green (lurking in the background of this photo..)

Why are people discussing existing preserved trams in the Steam Traction > Current and Proposed New-Builds section?

Diesels have already been mentioned on previous pages in this thread.
At least the trams in question, whilst being off topic, do actually exist, which is more than some of the "fantasy island" suggestions that have cropped up elsewhere in the pages which are never likely to be built!!
The whole thread on here did appear to start off as being one that dealt with the various newbuild projects which were being progressed - even if it was just the dreaded Facebook page project/group but it soon got into the why don't we build a (insert random locomotive class of personal choice) type suggestions thread..... after which I basically stopped looking at it very often. I only replied to the tram question as I happened to look at the thread this morning for the first time in months and saw some incorrect information about the trams....

We could start separate threads on Current and Proposed New Builds in the Diesel and Electric categories.

And for those of you who wondered what happened to me, I am still alive. I survived the tornado outbreak that destroyed my hometown of Mayfield, KY last month.
