Being pedantic of course Wayne did say no 67 (other diesels are available!) Although I am sure he means no diesel.

    Herne Hill to Tulse Hill.
This is the bit that worries me more than the climb to Haslemere. Not far but one hell of a dig, usually full power with diesel. I have suggested that the driver on the 67 hangs around for five minutes longer before leaving his loco!
One of the driving forces regarding not having a diesel is Haslemere Station. We are taking water there, only 7m spare between the length of the train and the end of the overlap. A train needs to pass us there, it wouldn't if we had one on the back.
As long as the weather is kind to us and it looks promising, we should be OK.

Yes - Tulse Hill is a very tricky one with the sharp curve thrown in. Best of luck!

It certainly is a curve. But Tangmere reminds us that shortage of steam shouldn't be an issue with a Bulleid! Fingers crossed for adhesion.

I remember sticking there back in Sept. 1964 on the season's last down Glasgow - Newhaven carsleeper. We were routed this way off the West London line as we were running late and it was the height of the morning peak. Unfortunately we were stopped by signals on the bank and our Black 5 (45299) had no chance of getting going again with such a heavy train. So there we sat until a Crompton appeared from Norwood Junction to drag us out of the way, no doubt throwing the rush hour into chaos but it was of great excitement to a steam mad 13 year old.

I would hope steam wouldn't run out while still in London! Adhesion will be the problem tomorrow, but, the weather seems to be set fair and a little breezy - perhaps drying off moisture by the time the train runs (and other trains' effects of clearing the rails to an extent will help). However, the Portsmouth Direct is notoriously wooded so it never really has clean rails in November. With 500 tons or so, '28 may well lose quite a bit of time to slipping, but fingers crossed that the solo effort is well managed by the undoubtedly skilled crew.

Potentially good news for tomorrow and especially @Wayne is that the RHTT was seen going down the Pompey Direct today at 4 pm.

Good, but a lot of leaves can fall between 1600 today and 1300 tomorrow!

More importantly there is a RHTT due through Haslemere on the down at 0703 tomorrow morning.

Good to see that the loco has passed its FTR exam. I see that on Twitter, if that's a current image, it's carrying an interesting headcode. I thought that the Pompey Direct (from Waterloo) should have the discs at three and nine o'clock. That said, on a circular route, any code will only be correct some of the time!

I did 35005 on that route on a run out of Alton to Salisbury via Aldershot, Guildford, Haslemere, Havant, and Southampton on 19th March 2001. Also photographed her on that route on April 14th 2002.

I'm sure it must have happened numerous times pre-9 July 1967.
