I believe it did run with 7 on occasion, but was very much working right at the limit of it's ability with no room for error according to some of those around at the time.

Does a mere two inches make any difference?

There will be more to it than just wheel diameter, adhesive weight over the driving wheels will also be a factor. Thinking logically, the bigger the wheel the further one charge of steam in the cylinders will have to propel the loco but at high speed the motion is under less strain than a small wheeled loco.
Paul Kane, sadly no longer with us, thought that a Black 5 was too high in the wheel for the Mallaig road

As did the old hand Lochaber crews, but then they had alternative locos at their disposal. In reality, while a Black 5 may not be ideal for the Extension, they have proved themselves to be more than adequate locos in the absence of anything else. I suspect that a B1 would manage just as well too - after all they did work to Mallaig in the final years of steam working unlike their LMS counterparts. But the ideal tool for this road remains the smaller wheeled K1 - "Haste ye back".

I heard a rumour about 4 months back that 44932 would appear before Tangmere. So that was obviously fake news!

Alternative hypothesis, the demise of 6201 made the need for an in house air braked loco to be available acute and changed internal schedules...

I don't think so. There never has been any news - fake or otherwise - about 44932's reappearence. The rumour that you heard has turned out to be inaccurate speculation - (what? on an internet forum? surely not!) - but that is not news. Had you heard it as fact, that would be a different matter.

    Sorry for being pedantic.

Just think what could be possible in theory a few years down the line - K1, K4 and V4. I can but dream.

No not from an internet forum Peter, told to me by someone who had "heard it" during a tour. I shall take him to task on Saturday when I see him.

    What’s the next rumour?

Tangmere to do a stint on the Jacobite?

Well if a Hall can do it, why not!?!

There are plenty of light pacifics on GWR branch lines!

Errr no! There are no light Pacifics on any line with the gradient profile and curvature of the WHL. Tangmere will be needed for the air braked Northern Belle.

Tongue was firmly in cheek, however, I never thought I would see a Royal Scot at Blaenau Ffestiniog...

Turntable is now fixed. 45212 was turned on Friday (last week), 44871 allowed to remain facing Fort William for it's remaining turns I believe (Thanks guys!).

Believe there should be a diesel going back with it and the PM stock.

Unfortunately, whilst 45212 was being turned on the turntable another track defect was reported and rendered the 'table unusable once again ... 44871 returned tender first, not very nice for the crew

A few clips from the final week of the 2021 season featuring LMS 5MT No.44871 and LMS 5MT No.45407 'The Lancashire Fusilier'.

A huge thank you to all the crews, staff, volunteers that have made this operating season such a success.

Not 2021, but twelve months ago today, the returning Jacobite empties over Rannoch Moor... IMG_9316.JPG IMG_9318.JPG [

The second one with the viaduct appearing out of the mist is very dramatic.
