I think some of @KristianGWR footage is superb. Something which I would love to aspire to. Having said that what I dislike is having to wade through pictures of trees and other line side paraphernalia. I can go out in my garden and video trees!!
What Kris does seems to be catching on with other videographers in the south. Please stop it!
At least the the northern guys filming on Shap and the S&C haven’t succumbed to the same irritating habit.

This just sounds like a you problem. Don't watch his videos and be done with it.

You make your videos one way, Kristian does his videos another.

    Simples.

Those shots are there to give context to a location, focus in on some of the finer details, or simply provide something different to look at over the soundtrack of the train approaching/going away before it's appeared in or left the scene. If you're just after a record shot, that's fine, you do you, but I'm not and, quite frankly, I don't appreciate being dictated to about how it "should" be done.

It depends what you want from a video.
If you just want a "run by" then they are not for you. They are in my opinion a little more on the "arty" side which I happen to like.
In some ways it is like the debates back in the 60's of the Giffordesque style of photography that I loved where often the loco was a minor part of the whole effect.
    Just watch whoever suits you.
Of course down south it is far harder to find a Shap or Ais Gill where a train can be filmed for a long while approaching. There the need to make a better length clip is fulfilled by the train.
I video as a side effect to still photography and when I look back am often disappointed that all it consists of is a train passing for a few seconds which is all pretty boring.
    But each to their own.

Loved the Chalton shot in particular. And on the arty dimension, I simply track along the slider to the first sign of the subject matter and then watch. No problem.

There is no way it should be done , each have their own style and I can see the attraction of using features in the landscape as a lead in to the main event. Because a few don’t like it it doesn’t make it wrong

Couldn't agree more - those shots of yours do add context to a location and add an additional level of interest. There's more to looking at trains than just the trains themselves. Please keep up the good work - your videos are excellent.

I wasn’t dictating at all. Just stating an opinion. As I said your videos are excellent. It’s just a shame that like @Big Al I have to fast forward to see the footage I want to see.

Sometimes if a train isn't audible until its in view, or there's no "action" going on, I get why people don't like still shots. But as you say Kris, they give context of a location, as well as give people an idea of the surroundings you are filming in, and potentially help them to find said location if they wish to use it in the future - ok you can't tell exactly where it is just looking at it, that's what google maps is for, but it helps.

I do similar things in my videos, but even when watching back my past videos, I skip to 'the action', I'm sure I'm not the only one that does this. Furthermore, if you have more than one shot of the train passing in one video, it can be off cutting straight from one passing shot to another.

The people sharing the footage share it in their own manner. Yes, video's that get 'straight to the point' are good if you 'just want the action', but if there are still shots added, and people don't like looking at a variation of 5-10 second long still shots for 30 seconds before a train comes into view, you have the option to skip ahead to it, as if they never existed. YouTube isn't planning on removing their playback slider anytime soon.

A pity that all this 'wibble' about the merits, or otherwise, of amateur videos is dominating a thread about what was an exemplary performance by footplate crew, locomotive and support crew over a busy and demanding route (plus bonus points to MNLPS and NR planners for a substantial re-write of the operating plan at a few days notice). Best locomotive+best train - and it was full; what's not to like?

Whilst poor Mr Proctor was plugging away with the shovel allowing Wayne & Clan Line to work their magic yet you missed him off. Ah well, at least the wave he gave my two boys at Bedhampton was appreciated by them!

Some really cracking video's covering yesterdays run, brilliant stuff! I don't mind the trees, signals, bridges, animals etc and all that's included too, thank you chaps!

More importantly, there were no adhesion issues either thankfully!

Agreed. There's a place for this sort of discussion, but it's not really a thread like this. Move these bits of the discussion to the photo/video section, perhaps? For what it's worth, I use this kind "cut-away" shots. They are very useful, sometimes essential. My advice, though, is use them sparingly ;-)
