Amazing footage. In the mid -70's I was taken to see and ride the Schwebebahn by a DB steam driver (from Wanne-Eickel Depot). Together with roaming around the Ruhr on the footplate of 044 -585 and 044-650, it gave me some of my happiest memories from those distant halcyon days!

Of course, this is an unbelievable thing to see in your lifetime, but I get why they decided to suspend it. You can clearly see how slow the train was going and also the risks you were exposed to when riding this train. If the thing that was holding it broke, then there could have been a lot of victims. Unfortunately, it is impractical and prolonged compared to the current trains that german companies like https://www.dbauskunft.com/de/ have in their possession.

I rode the Schwebebahn back in the early '90s. I don't recall any lift access, which was hard on my old mum who I was taking on her first visit to Germany.

You can still do it at the other end with a trolleybus, though both modes rolling stock have been replaced now.....

The Solingen trolleybus turning loop runs under the Schwebebahn for several hundred yards in the main street at Vohwinkel

Did it in 2006 along with a visit to the Harz. Well worth a visit.
