The rules say same company or same function.

Just reading Tom's reply, set me thinking. May idea might fall foul of the rules as those Southern Pacific's were theoretically on paper at least mixed traffic machines, rather than express/passenger machines. Which in turn has always had me thinking how did Bulleid convince the powers that be at the Ministry of Transport with it being the height of the war.......

That's always puzzled me too. Best guess? Partly their 6'-2" drivers, partly the fact beer was never rationed.

That probably played a big part - "Well Mr Gresley built the Mixed Traffic V2s and they have 6'2'' drivers, so my locos must obviously be Mixed Traffic locos too. What's that about some 2-8-2s in Scotland being express locos with 6'2'' drivers? Well there's only 6 of them, they don't count... Fancy a drink?"

Point of information: there was only ever one "Hush Hush" so to get both versions of it, given one was rebuilt into the other, would be something worthy of Doctor Who level antics with time and space...

Like the overall premise of this thread is itself inherently reasonable by the normal laws of physics

Your splitting hairs Simon. As you know fine well what I mean, the as built original version with water tube boiler and rebuilt with conventional fire tube boiler and A4 style streamlining.

I know. I was musing on how we’d get both at once :)

If we had a TARDIS, and could go back and show people what had been achieved in preservation, we'd have no problem persuading people to not scrap the last of those classes which are particularly missed, I reckon!
We could happily pay them a sum which is modest for us but vast for them (that's the beauty of reverse inflation going back in time) and just get them to hide it somewhere we could "discover" it a few decades later...

But then wouldn't you thus remove the motivation for you to take the TARDIS back to show people what had been achieved in preservation, thus creating a paradox? ;)

Ah, but how do we pay them? Current notes would be worthless. Pay in gold sure, but gold today costs maybe ten times what it did back then...

In principle you could find come commodity that is cheaper now in real terms than it was then.
(I say nothing about the practicality of that, nor of the time travel itself.)

All time travel runs the risk of radically altering history through the butterfly effect.

And, if it will be invented in the future it will show up now at some point, and at which point the future inventor will copy the technology that now already exists.

Then of course we'd need to work out what colour to paint it. But we'd have already decided...

Now they both did! Both versions of the W1: 400 psi or 250 psi, 32.5 sq ft grate or 50, compound or simple.

With the original, water tube, Yarrow boiler, with the steam circuit from it as finally sorted by Chapelon with the ratio between the HP and the LP cylinders adjusted together with the steam between them reheated and a double Kylchap exhaust, it went fine in final trials.

Rebuilt with a really large grate to a conventional locomotive boiler and A3 cylinders it did solid steady work with the overnight Scotch sleeper trains.

The original state is as tantalising a near miss as the LNWR Claughtons and a fascinating monument to informed development work but to haul 13 carriages over the Settle and Carlisle what it became might be very useful on a modern special.

    Either to choice..

I have my doubts on how a water tube boiler would live with an 'open' feed system, perhaps any marine engineers might be able to comment ?
