Mods hat flung off into the next galaxy !!!

On here and farcebook groups, people continue to be so surprised at the stupidity of people and blind disregard to the rules and their own safety. You only have to look across society with big and little actions to appreciate that many have an overriding sense of self entitlement (young and old) that trumps anything else

we also continue to jump to conclusions that so many times those highlighted are somehow part of our fraternity. Steam locomotives (despite any environmental concerns) continues to have a magnetic appeal for the public , a free experience to pop out and see . That enthusiasm clearly is good for the movement as hopefully it translates into visits to heritage lines , but how it is kept sensibly managed is a whole different challenge

Right , Nasa, need to recover my hat

Quite so! But the first point to recognise is that foaming with indignation on this forum is utterly pointless. Second is to understand that those behaving with what is considered dangerous behaviour don't see it that way, and more often and not there is no immediate danger. However, a small modification of their behaviour and they put themselves at risk of very serious injury or death. Education is the way forward and the enthusiast photographers and tour passengers who are present in these situations could help by pointing out politely that the railway operators rightly consider that the safest procedures require that people are kept outside the potential operating envelope of trains and if that is not the case, the trains will be stopped, on the singular occasion and potentially in the future.

I totally agree but unfortunately it usually results in a barrage of foul mouthed language from the idiots you are speaking to. <BJ>

Without a doubt my ambition is always to educate and explain why an action isn't allowed as opposed to just saying "You can't do that". I had a few years working the HSTs around the Midlands on charters and specials and they were full of their own challenges with people wanting to 'misbehave'. The thing to remember is that throughout the industry, and speaking with a TOC guard hat on, the people who can/do cause issues are about 1 in 200. The vast majority are no bother at all and it really is the tiny minority who do have the potential to cause issues.

From some of the comments when as a steward (and wearing a jacket identified as such) I have received when pointing out to locals rather than passengers where they should be (sometimes bordering on abuse) I would suggest that passenegrs would get even less of a response from the general public.

So, four days to go to the Lickey trips and no times on VT's website, no tickets, and no paths on RTT. Are there any issues?

Very likely but that entirely misses the point. It is self evident that the interventions of railway professionals alone are not sufficient to manage behaviour to keep it within the parameters of the relevant risk assessments. As there is often a disjunction between the perceptions of risk by some of the public and the professional view, it can only be helpful if normative behaviour can be used to reduce the disjunction.

Section 6 from P34 is apposite.

    Email just received from VT:

    Good morning,

Thank you for booking onto the train trip on Saturday 20th November with Vintage Trains.

We are still awaiting confirmed timings from Network Rail for both the morning and afternoon trips. We are in constant dialogue with NR and we have been advised we should receive the timings on Wednesday 17th November. Timings will be sent out at the earliest opportunity.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

    Kind regards,

Who else is looking for to the lickey trips???

hoping to see both trains and interesting to see the loaded trains unassisted. I wonder if the trains will stop at bromsgrove station and commence the climb… like previous pannier trips??

Anybody got some good ideas of location on the banks??

Does this mean there is not actually a blanket prohibition on unassisted steam through New St, as I'm sure has been suggested previously.

I've departed New St unassisted before. The Illuminati with 60163 comes to mind. That was in November 2019. Tornado from New St to Preston with no diesel.

    Thanks for the clarification.
I'm sure it has been given before as a reason that a particular tour couldn't run without a diesel attached.
Maybe it was more to do with pathing through the station at a busy time than an actual issue with the station itself.

Davo, the diesel travels light engine from Tyseley to Worcester ahead of the morning train, and returns light engine to Tyseley after the afternoon train. Paths posted a few posts back by @D1002.
Excellent news that 7029 will not have to drag the diesel to Worcester!

Just received an email from VT which confirms there are no seat allocations in whatever coach is shown on your boarding pass. Also no buffet car.
