That's annoying as my wife and I baled out at Pickering as passengers were told full refunds would be made. I would have preferred to have got to Whitby a little late.

RTT was showing no report for a lot of the inbound Whitby services, but did show the return workings correctly.

    Afternoon all,

Can anyone advise whether the NYMR will be running trains during the Spring (February) 2022 Half Term?

    Cheers

There's nothing planned, until around mid/late March or so the start of the new running season. As there are some major projects to be carried out, for instance the other bridges [24+25 I think] at Goathland. The collapse of Cleveland Bridge didn't help as they were to have replaced them, but thankfully the contract has been re-let to another Civil Engineering outfit. The ongoing pandemic caused no end of problems with many projects on the line, what with the lookdowns pushing them back.....

I'm afraid not. There is nothing running this winter between the last Santa Special on Christmas Eve and Monday 4th April 2022. There are two more bridges to be replaced in the Goathland area during this time.

"Crikey!" was my initial thought, "I hadn't heard about that." But I guess you refer to a contractor, not a piece of physical infrastructure. Brought me up with a start, though!

Indeed Tom. Cleveland Bridge were quite a famous Civil Engineering outfit. They built some quite iconic not to mention famous structures. For instance the Sydney Harbour Bridge [the model they based the Tyne Bridge on:rolleyes::Resistanceisfutile:] and Tyne Bridge being two. They fell foul of the Pandemic IIRC as they'd bid for a major bridge out in the Far East, which like so many projects both Large and Small was put on hold. In turn causing cash flow issues:(.....

Edit: give Cleveland Bridge a Google, to find more information........

We used to watch from the top floor of Teesside Poly as the huge girders were transported though Middlesbrough, executing a tricky turn at the T junction below our lofty perch.

Was a welcome distraction from thermodynamics and third order reaction theory!

There is also a 800m relay at Farwath abut 1 1/2 miles South of Levisham between Br 10 and 12.
This also involves some minor Bridge work at Br 11.

Platform 3 (NYMR) is connected to Platform 4 on the Esk Valley line. Google Earth for details.

Er.... Platform 1 is on the Esk Valley line (NR); Platform 2 is a single face on the NYMR and not actually connected to Platform 1. Platforms 3 & 4 form an island platform on the NYMR. In pre-closure days, the entrance to the goods yard was between platforms 1 & 2.

Except they happen to have Pickering and Whitby, plus Grosmont and Gothland (Heartbeat & Harry Potter) and the walks around those areas.

Debatable. Lovely as the line is, frankly they are arguably crippled by their infrastructure and are only still around following vast amounts of (very successful) fundraising and grant monies that run into multi millions. Their bridges alone could sink any "normal" business.

Don't get me wrong, I want the NYMR to go on forever in its current form as much as anyone on this forum, but I don't think a 20+ mile railway is always an ideal length for a sustainable long term future. I don't believe I'm the only one on here that has a small niggling doubt that in the far future as costs rise and grants potentially fall, that the survivors might just be the 5 to 10 mile railways that have boring infrastructure and an extremely sweated commercial model.

Lack of a destination, until Whitby became a regular trip, was my point.

I’d still disagree. Pickering and Goatland are still worth visiting with shops, pubs, restaurants, etc and a variety of walks. GCR has nothing comparable.

If you say so. Not saying it's not a great railway but they aren't a Minehead, Dartmouth or Tunbridge Wells.
