And an edit would be appreciated to correct the spelling of "Garratt" (H.W. Garratt designed a type of articulated steam engine; a Garrett is a Suffolk product that mostly runs on the road). You wouldn't believe how often this crops up in connection with the WHR...!

Strictly speaking, K1 is a Garratt, not a Beyer-Garratt; BP only introduced the latter term as a publicity device when the Garratt patent expired in the 1920s.

Oh sorry, I don't know much about the 'industrial' stuff.

Unfortunately you're one of many who fall into that category. When you start to take an interest, you'll find it just as fascinating and interesting as the main line stuff. I thoroughly enjoy them both. Like their main line counterparts, the industrial builders developed their own individual house styles that generally made them immediately recognisable as their products. There is aslo so much more variety and a host of unique oddballs with the industrial scene.

I can think of quite a few people who would fit that description.

Too true, Frank, but the products of Beyer Peacock, Hunslet, Kitson, R.S, & H, North British and a host of other builders get lumped into the 'industrial' category by so many so called railway enthusiasts, whatever their size and use and therefore not worth bothering about.

When-I-were-a-lad there was a small industrial at the gas works in Altrincham that used to trundle down Moss Lane to get the coal wagons from the station yard. It was filthy and totally unkempt and I can remember being pretty sniffy about it. Since then, and completely due to the efforts of preservationists, I have learnt to appreciate them. Thanks for that.

    Regards

One of the items we've got on display at Manchester Central Library at the moment (until end of March) is some issues of the BP Works Bulletin from WW2 - at the top of each issue is a silhouette of a Beyer-Garratt, they must have regarded them highly.

Well those 'so called' railway enthusiasts ought to open their eyes a bit and see what these 'industrial' companies built.

Vulcan Foundry, St Helens; Beyer Peacock, Gorton, Manchester; Kitson, Leeds and North British, Glasgow.

While we're defending the honour of the private loco builders, just a reminder that Beyer Peacock built the largest steam loco ever built in the UK - the broad (5') gauge Beyer Garratt 4-8-2+2-8-4 for the USSR, c. 1934. No doubt someone will point us at some pictures.

What's wrong with private builders? Nothing in my book.
Considering that North British knocked out 8F's, WD's of both type, Jubilees, King Arthurs or Scotch Arthurs as they were known and B1's. And that Beyer Peacock built quit a few GWR 5700 Class Panniers. Go abroad and you'll see there work more than here but the enthusiast who thinks they never built anything but industrials needs there head checking.

BP built a considerable number of mainline/branchline locos for the GNR(I) and also all (I think!) the BCDR steam loco fleet.
