I Googled the registration and the results say it is an Austin Seven - I wouldn't know

Just found another link to the Austin 7 on Flickr...

Apparently it's one of the last Austin 7 Rubys produced too, and has been modified quite a lot.
    http://www.austin7.org/Technical Articles/Ruby Features/

I see from a Cornwall Austin 7 Club thread that it was bought in 2018 from Auction, with quite a few non-standard mods, and is now enjoying life being driven around the Marlborough Downs.

Sorry to go off-thread, back to SVR news!

    Richard.

A snippet from SVR News is that the SVR is seeking boiler ticket extensions for 2857 until the end of next year, and for 1501. The last dates I saw for expiry of the tickets were July and Feb 2022 respectively. There’s no guarantee they will be granted.

Engineering services hope that 4930 and 13268 will be into traffic before Bridgnorth Loco Works closes for roof and crane works, due to start in May. They also hope 7812 (at Tyseley ) will return to traffic in 2022.

All subject to the usual and COVID-19 caveats. Fingers well and truly crossed for the above, and that nothing untoward happens to other members of the fleet.

Indeed, no mention of it only being temporary either. Their PR Department on Facepest declined to answer how long it would be left in this guise, given they were quick enough to come back and claim "We'll continue to restore and preserve railway history as we always have - accurately and historically", it was clearly a concious and deliberate decision not to respond to the rest of the comment querying the duration - therefore it can be concluded it is NOT intended as only a temporary change.

Given they announce it is a "renaming", and it's clearly impossible to rename something that doesn't already have a name, it not only narrows the field as to what locomotive it could be, but also rather makes a mockery of the railway's claims of undertaking accurate restoration and preservation - at least when locos assume the identities of others from within the class there is an element of historic presidence, and they generally only do so for a short duration.

The railway loses credibility with his PR stunt.
For the sake of their business, let's hope they attract more people than they put off.

I get that for some the Royal Family is a core part of their personality but even only 10 years ago, this would have flew with no one batting an eye. With the Queen going into hiding, The Americans asking if Andrew can come out and play via Prestwick and a number of other "off" stories about them that have come out the last few years, this feels all a bit weird and unbolstering. Plenty of engines with royal names out there. Plus she has to make it there first.

This really isn't going to end well.

    Seems very gimmicky and click-baity.

It doesn't seem very well thought out - no indication of the loco, no real indication of the criteria beyond 'best of British and the Queen' and no indication of how the name will be selected.

It's a bit demeaning for the SVR, it is the sort of thing you'd expect of a desperate publicity hungry organisation, not one of the top heritage lines in the country.

Their PR reads: “The Severn Valley Railway has launched a competition to find a temporary new name”

No-one has a lower opinion of this idea than I do.

Care to put money on that? :Meh:

If (as seems likely) one of those predictably toadying royalist theme emerges, hows about 'Prince Albert'? Nice stainless steel ring out front ....... Wot? :Wideyed:

I assume that any mention of Mountbatten will get dirty looks from the boiler department ducks.

Whatever you think of the naming idea (I’m not a fan personally), it’s certainly getting publicity as it’s just been on the local Central bulletin on ITV this morning.

I thought on entering that it might be an idea to suggest something not only relating to the "Best of British", but also having ties to the railways in some form; as such, I decided to put forward the suggestion of "Isambard Kingdom Brunel".

Admittedly not the best idea, but I thought that this choice of name might be a bit more appropriate.
