Whilst a new-build is unlikely (until the Peel line re-opens!), I wonder how many components you are away from building one in installments?

In the picture it does look closer to Swindon green than to any of the various shades of green from other railways.

Has anyone seen any news surrounding the work being carried out on No.14 at John Fowler at Ulverston and the results of the survey carried out on No.16 with a view to possible restoration please?

Unfortunately I have heard nothing re No14. As regards 16 the only area of concern was some corrosion on the cylinder block in a normally inaccessible area under the smokebox. Other than that nothing unexpected was found. The official line is still "for assessment" so I cannot comment further .... but will, and post photos, as soon as allowed. Sorry.

I never get why itso hush hush about 16 yet other projects can be freely discussed. Anyone who cares to take the time to walk past when the doors are open can see that there's already substantial work done on it including brand new tanks already built, other bits eg boiler and drivers having long ago been sent to various specialists for work . I think 16 is well past the assessment stage and well on the road to being back in service.

Whilst I understand due to the cabbage incident the management of the railways may like to keep things under the radar at the end of the day they are a government department and are expected to have transparency.

Allan, we, the HRV, have been asked not to post comments or photos of No16 other than it is being "assessed for a possible restoration to working order" and I have tried not to betray that trust. The railway management have their reasons for this, and, while I mightn't agree I will respect their wishes. I'm disappointed that you don't feel the same way.
Regarding No11 the IoMSRSA Facebook page carried a photo of it being test steamed for the first time last Tuesday.

In what way have I been asked not to post pictures or comment on 16?

And how in any way are you entitled to be disappointed that I don't feel the same way?

I didn't say that you had been as you are not a member of the Heritage Railway Volunteers and I am entitled to feel any way I like. I do note that your photographs appear to have been taken on the private property of the contractors who had been told not to allow photography. Did you actually ask for and gain permission?

Closer than what to Southern olive green. Stroudley's? :Woot: Seriously tho', I reckon once fully lined out, Maitland is going to look an absolute treat at the head of a rake in the smart red/cream livery. Bet it's regular driver will be itching to see how it performs! :)

Lovely image of No.11's safety valves lifting there Ray. Home soon, eh? Many thanks for posting ......

..... and the (inevitable) follow up question. Which one is next up for some tlc please?

That's a hell of an ASSUMPTION...they were taken from the pavement of a public highway....don't have to ask permission to take them from there...plenty of bits of 16 clearly visible without having to go on anyone's property.

Like I say why all the cloak and dagger? 16 is public property, it's restoration is being paid for out of public funds. If anyone wants to make a fuss out of it then they would be making enquiries through a FOI request.....

Currently No.12 is being worked on 'in house' and stripped down to the bare frames. No.10 went to Alan Keef's a while ago and the frames then moved on to the SVR for a trial fit of one of the new boilers. This was to correct the problem encountered on Nos. 4 & 12 where the washout plug holes on the front corners of the throatplate didn't quite line up with the holes in the frames. As always these overhauls depend on funding from Treasury and with a new DoI minister in charge it may take a while to see how things turn out. Thanks for your interest.

I do hope they keep one in the "(best guess at) as delivered green". It suits them very nicely and goes very well with the stock (in red/cream or plum/cream). In purely subjective matters, be it known ..... I'm always right! :)

I heard talk that there was a plan to have 2 servicable locos in each colour scheme, so (say) 10 and 11 in Ailsa Green, 4 and 12 in Indian Red, and that would imply 13 and 16 in Holly Green. Did 16 ever carry Holly Green? Perhaps 12 will come back matching 13, and 16 will carry Indian Red. 14 could go into MNR livery to compliment 15. Who knows...

Great news. Now all we have to do is dream up some utterly irresistible new colour scheme, sit back and await the spontaneous appearance of two additional working locos (or ex-CDR railcars!). If only it worked that way, Eh? ;)

Re: No.16 ..... I was wondering that as well. Have to say though, whether in green or in red, the bit that matters is in steam! :)

Considering how long No.11's overhaul took I very much doubt it - in time for the 2023 season would be my guess. On the positive side No.10 doesn't need as much work having had new cylinders in 1993. I think the deciding factor with this loco and No.12 may be finance. The new DoI minister (the railways are part of Infrastructure) has inherited several capital projects which are already late and way over budget such as the prom. 25 million and the Liverpool IoMSP terminal almost doubled to 73 million. After that there are the planned Peel and Laxey sewage treatment plants etc. etc. so there may have to be some cost cutting where things 'are nice to have' such as the bridges on the former MNR lines.
Mr.L has stated that he wants 7 locos for IMR 150 which is only 18 months away so time will tell if this is achievable. I hope someone 'letting the cat out of the bag' yesterday has not jeopardized the return of No.16.
As regards liveries I think it safe to say that No.13 will remain in Holly green which all the locos, including No.16, carried until the Indian red came in from 1946. The change to red took some years to be completed and Nos. 2 & 7 were still in green when dismantled. ISTR that No.12 will remain in Indian Red and I'd be very surprised if No.14 appeared in anything other than MNR livery as the owner is a big MNR fan. As regards 10 & 16's liveries - no idea! I have been scanning slides from the early 80's and it is amazing how we sometimes had stock in 3 or even 4 different liveries in the same train back then. I hope I have answered everyone's questions in the one post.
    Cheers,
    Ray.
