That maybe the case but they haven't done it and it doesn't stop anyone else. There's a link to an FRM article on him. You could look that up, flesh out the bare bones of something. It would be better than what is there now. This how the other pages get built. Things get added as new pictures or sources are found. Someone has to start it though. You clearly feel he is important to the railway so you must have some knowledge of his life and contribution. Otherwise why would you care?

I think you are doing the volunteers who contribute to that site a bit of a disservice to suggest that they have some personal vendetta. Some of them weren't even born when David Pollock was GM. Why would they care? Its quite an accusation to make really.

Especially as I didn't make it.

You can't have it both ways. In one paragraph you say that I should add stuff and then accuse of me of **** in the next. Because yes, that is really the way to get someone to contribute...

I recognise that it is a dilemma and I am not disputing that. The fact that the Dduallt box was lost during the 1980s, along with various other things lost since then, and your saving of the Earl's domes shows exactly why as much care needs to be taken with 'modern' heritage as with traditional heritage because otherwise you end up with a massive blank in the record. Things and peoples achievements are all too easily lost.

The constant pejorative language about things associated with that era is revealing in itself.

What might be unimportant to us now, might well take on more significance in the future and if it is lost then it is lost.

Why shouldn't someone care about the less fashionable era or things in history? The ditch is much more interesting than the middle of the road.

I find it most interesting that you spend a lot of time castigating others for their perceived failure to secure the more recent history of the FR, yet when given an opportunity to help by uploading some information on David Pollock to Festipedia, you decline the offer. To use your words "You can't have it both ways".

Ah yes, the old 'why don't you do it yourself canard'. Actually I have standards. I recognise that I don't have the knowledge or ability to write a bio for David Pollock that would be of a satisfactory standard and writing a poor quality bio would be a disservice. And unlike those involved with the current FR I don't have connections from his time on the line who could fill in gaps or provide information. So yes you can have it both ways.

Bit late to the discussion, but I've certainly departed from Platform 1 at Hythe in the last decade (can't remember when, probably early 2010s).
[Edited as I stupidly said platform 4 originally]

Could've sworn it wasn't, last time I was there ... which must've been around 94-96. Only done New Romney-Dungeness this century (I remember the BR station at New Romney in service .... God, I'm old!) and in over six decades, still haven't ever seen Dr.Syn in steam!

Weird one on the Cambrian Coast .... I'd swear blind I remember travelling on services which crossed at both Aberdyfi (still Abrdovey to BR then) and Dyffryn Ardudwy, even though one site lists both as having been reduced to single platforms four years earlier.

In the book "Romney then and now "it states platform 4 at Hythe was removed in 1974.

Lovely clip, but Plat 4 at Hythe used to be to the right of where Black Prince was standing. Are you perhaps thinking of New Romney?

(Waiting for the 'Your post has been moved" message from the mods!:))

Sorry - I thought this discussion was about New Romney! I didn't notice that it's moved to Hythe - where there are only three platforms.

Sorry, me being stupid, I meant Platform 1 (the bay on the far side) not Platform 4 (now lost under the car park).

I thought this thread was about a line in Wales. Can we have a RHDR thread to avoid cluttering this one.

An 11 carriage pendolino (in terms of length) could be accommodated in platform 1 at Porthmadog. Don't think P1 needs to be any bigger!?

One might wonder at the lack of points to enable operations from 'Plat 1a' and 'Plat 1b' .... pity about the ever so slight curvature smack bang where they'd need to go! :)

Enquiry: Have there been any more rumblings concerning the suggestion to remove the slate spoil hills from Blaenau, or has the idea quietly died?

While not labelled as such, trains do out/go into the yard after dropping passengers off in front of the signal box stopping short of the points, with another train in the main part of the platform.

Welsh Slate Ltd currently extract some which is either milled or exported as secondary aggregate from the old Oakley site. The are applying for a licence to do this for another 20 years but it has not yet been granted as far as i know. It is not an especially large operation.

The multimillion pound scheme to take loads of it away by rail died a long time ago. Probably because it required multimillion pounds to be spent. I expect any attempt to do so now would not be popular with UNESCO anyway. Enough damage has already been done by untopping the mines. Any expansion of that would be detrimental to the heritage of the area.
