You are quite correct. My preferred political philosophy is a form of anarchism. It is one of the reasons that I am fond of heritage railways. Very many originally had an organisation that was essentially anarchic although usually unrecognised as such.

 

Is it manufactured here? If not then you have to add the carbon cost of getting it here. As far as I can see a lot of this is far in the future. I’m no climate change denier but I can see there is a danger that it will become a band wagon for all types of assorted nutters. It won’t be long before they are gluing themselves to the rails on heritage railways

 

I think it's already become one. The political liberal left have become absolutely fixated on it and obsessed with it, to the exclusion of practically everything else.

Talking about it perhaps, but from what I can see, political orthodoxies of either persuasion are doing nothing beyond talking. Whilst who can waffle more convincingly may impress those already mesmerised by the hypnotic willy-waving which accompanies any political ego, it does sod all to advance practical steps towards decarbonisation.

Before any more views are expounded on whether we (the human race) can or cannot clean up our act, remember that 40 years ago low sulphur oil based fuels were almost unknown for general use. A mixture of pollution legislation and the realisation that low sulphur fuels caused less damage to internal combustion engines as well promoted the change. Changes in refining technology to reduce the sulphur content were incorporated as refineries were rebuilt over the years. Changes don't normally happen from a given date, they creep or drift into working practices until they are accepted as the normal. The same will happen with burning coal.

Just a question for those who understand the technicalities of oil refining, what happens to al the sulphur compounds no longer in the fuel?

All concerns aside, you've facilitated a fascinating conflab.

"Almost unknown" ..... to the public at large, certainly. The climatic effects of fossil fuels were first demonstrated over a century before that and well known within the coal, oil and automotive industries and almost certainly by governments during the timeframe you memtion, hence the note of frustration you may discern in many of my posts on the subject.

Point of order: The planet doesn't actually need saving. It managed without us jumped up modified chimps for eons and if we do manage to zilch ourselves out at some point, will continue just fine without us.
