The latest issue of Atlantic News said “if all goes to plan it should be possible to do the testing and running trials in the spring of 2023.”

I think that is the first time a reasonably firm date has been mentioned. My sense is the team want it “right first time” rather than being bounced into getting it running early. At a guess, Covid has probably set it back by about 12 months or so. (My interpretation for both statements, not gospel).

There's bound to be a spare Bulleid tender about the place? Or a Drummond watercart? It'll be fine...
Is it cricket to say it's complete without a tender? Tornado didn't do that, what did the Saint do?

Heresy! There's a fair bit on Beachy Head's website about the tender(s) with some connection to the build and fair to say that, as usual, Brighton had their own way of doing things!

I’m sure I updated on the relevant thread only a couple of weeks ago that, painting aside, the tender was basically finished.

For those that don’t know, it consists of the modified underframe of one ex-LBSC tender; with the wheelsets from a second. The upper parts (i.e. tank etc) are new.

Historically GWR locomotives did not in any sense have their own tenders. They were simply given the next available one as they came out of the works. So Betton Grange doesn't need her "own" tender since the concept is false. Indeed its probably good practice for tenders to be rotated around preserved GW locomotives.

I'm not sure Swindon really held much belief in the concept of "the locomotive" at all, and shuffled boilers, tenders, frames, wheels at will. Any given "engine" is simply a probability intersection of the relevant bits. It's a little-known fact that both Schrödinger and Neils Bohr worked in the parts department

Schrödinger maybe. Bohr had much more fixed ideas about corporeal reality.

What is also little known is that Werner Heisenberg was a colleague of Charles Rous-Marten. It’s thought his famous uncertainty principle (that the more precisely you measure the position, the less certain you are of the momentum) arose from Rous-Marten’s observations in 1904, when he was able to definitively ascertain the position of “City of Truro” on Wellington Bank, but with concomitant lack of precision about its actual velocity …

Maybe so, but to my mind its more important to consider the philosophical input of Lewis Caroll, based of course, on the GWR at Oxford. Can we not see an echo of ""When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less." in Collett's determination that a locomotive was new when he said it was?

Didn't mean that at all did I. :Meh:
Just one of those where I see potential for an engine like this to go to other railways for certain events which not only brings money in for its home railway but also advertises said home railway so that more people visit said home railway where it is based.
So both visiting railway get money and said home railway get more money.

I still think there’s potential for a few more new build tank engines for some smaller heritage railways, especially the S&D at Midsomer Norton.

I know the Standard 3 2-6-0 has been somewhat dunted on the head but another Standard 3 tank should in theory be cheaper and quicker to produce if a railway wanted to fund that. The group deserve a rest once its out in revenue service! But it won't be MSN for several years yet. The lack of space, lack of need when theres plenty of medium industrials and the fact they'd be spreading themselves too thinly.

The problem with building another of a class of new-build is that it misses all the cachet if "bringing a class back from extinction", which seems to be a good deal of the factor in the enthusiasm for the fund-raising for doing it. I doubt it will ever get to the point where a new-build is cheap enough to build as a self-funding thing.
