The Bluebell obviously had the Q1 before and their website suggests that there is a verbal agreement with the NRM for it to potentially return to them in the future.

Surely the NRM wouldn't chuck out Churchill given it a) represents an innovative class of locomotive and b) is part of British political history too?

I'm hoping the redevelopment allows them to display more locmotives. It's probably not practical but I'd love to see them display locos from Heritage lines which are awaiting overhaul and would otherwise be sat out in the open, rusting. You could put a little display board next to it with some info about the loco & the railway that it's based on - the NRM get a regular supply of different exhibits to display and the lines see their loco protected from the elements. Surely that's worth something against the cost of transport?

On the question of the NRM displaying out of traffic locos from heritage railways: nice idea, but across the whole sector, the combined length of notionally preserved locos is considerably longer than the combined length of sidings under cover. Simply moving locos round the country doesn’t change that fundamental point. Put simply it would be one in, one out - putting a heritage line loco on display at the NRM would mean an NRM loco being stuck up some siding somewhere out in all weathers …

Can't they all just go in the massive covered siding area at Box Tunnel?

Hopefully, anything which gets de-accessioned will get the businesslike attention 563 has had.

In no way would that be businesslike! 563 is the right size and proved to be in surprisingly good condition.

I think I'd sort of hoped that with the expanded display space at both York and Shildon coming up, there might be room for either.
It was really nice to see Conway from Middleton under cosmetic restoration at Shildon as there's very little representation of industrial locomotives at either site.

You forgot the important part : 563 is just the right size, ......., for the railway it has gone to.

It wouldn't have been much use to the Bluebell or Mid Hants as it would struggle to take a businesslike load over their gradients.

Mid Hants perhaps but Bluebell no. Sadly, big chufferites can always find a ''reason''.

Given the comparative max gradients (1 in 55 vs 1 in 60), length of gradients (quite similar on both) and normal loads, why do you think large engines are justified on one but not on the other? Show your workings, i.e. reasons better than “because that’s what I like”.

Both Alresford and Medstead have severe gradients nearly from the platform ends. This does not prevent the railway from hauling five with a 2MT if needed

And the Bluebell has 1:63 off the platform end at HK and 1:65 off the end at Kingscote, and routinely uses a 125 year old class 1 loco to haul trains - so I’m not sure what your point is? (And, how often does the MHR use their Ivatt on five coach trains?)

    Err, not true.
Alresford starts at 1/3194, ½ mile later goes to 1/80.
Medstead is 1/200 in the platforms, continuing as such to the summit at "Thank C****t" Bridge. The gradient is 1/60 up to the Country End of the platforms.
Ropley, on the other hand, is 1/250, rising to 1/80 soon after the London End of the loop, and to 1/60 ¾ mile later. (Not a cold start, obviously.)

PS , A 2MTT with five on 'if needed' is not quite the same as regular, is it?

Thanks for the correction. By the way is five the maximum number of vehicles which can be accommodated at all platforms?

Nope, Medstead will only take four fully in the platforms - 291ft according to a quick measurement on Google maps.

Hopefully we’ll be able to settle it once and for all after 563 is back into steam and (hopefully) visits both railways

They have made a start on sorting out the disposition of some of the items on that listing as we have apparently received an e-mail from the Science Museum Group today saying that we have been successful in obtaining the Ransomes single-deck trolleybus....
