    Sorry you have lost me there, is that relevant to discussion of donor 5227?

    Well l have clocked the smiley thing. Anyway identifying another 'spare' standard 4 would certainly be useful as the Bluebell have a disused ex-Bulldog that could be restored good as new . ( ;

    Plenty of 41's, 51's or 56's who could be a donor then ;)

    And just what, if anything, can be butchered to produce that Kruger or Abadare several seem to have a hankering for? :)

    That'd be the Dukedogs, the 'bitsas' which resulted from an unnatural act between the earlier Bulldog and Duke classes. What with all this Swindon stuff being so similar, a very easy thing to trip over! :)

    Kruger - nothing. Aberdares had a standard 4 boiler - after a while, anyway.

    All very amusing but must hold my hand up to confusing my 4s and 2s. All the more remarkeable considering l posted on here way back in 2013 about using 5668s standard 2 boiler to ''resurrect a Bulldog ''. With the passage of time l am pretty sure the Kent and East Sussex would now have something to say about that !

    It would be easier to oil round a Bulldog than a 56

    I'm sceptical about that statement. It's GWR with the same number of inside big ends, cylinders and valve gear so the oiling points will be in the same awkward places. It's got the same number of wheels and axleboxes and it has a tender with all the extra oiling points this entails. The only advantage I can see is that there's two less coupling rod bearings to pour oil into. I suppose that you could lay on the running plate and pour oil into things with one of those GW long reach barrel feeders, which is harder to do on the 56XX because of the tanks. How you get the corks out and back is something else, though.

    Well there must be lots of other parts that could be used because of GWR standards and the tender could be ROD.

    Didn't the 5600s have extra frame stiffeners added to the original dsign which get in the way of just about everything?

    I was thinking of access via the running plate but forgot about the corks. One of our members at the model engineering society was describing the method of oiling up the motion on a 56 and it sounded very difficult. It actually sounded worse than going into the gas circuit on a nuclear power station

    The issues with clearances on the 5600 class are demonstrated in this clip [17'-18"], from Chris Eden-Green:
