Facts are neutral; the selection of which facts to emphasise or not is potentially much more partisan. So, in terms of my post, I remain firm in my view that there is no problem with this research project - something even @Monkey Magic can agree with me on, despite our dramatic differences on the wider topic. What may give rise to problems is how the output of that project is used, and aspects of the outcomes emphasised (or not).

And that's why the Greens are stuck in a hole. If the Greens think they can win any election on a purely ecological ticket then they have a long time waiting.

No! It's more complex. Can't be bothered to write an undergraduate essay about it but this gives a hint.

As a heads up to @D1039 and @S.A.C. Martin and any others interested.

Eric Williams' 'Capitalism and Slavery' is being issued as a paperback next month - https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/446/446668/capitalism-and-slavery/9780241548165.html

There is a good article from today about the book. I'd argue that Williams' thesis is useful in terms of tying in the relationship between slavery and railways (if you haven't read it already).

Many thanks. I read a large part of it through Google books as part of my uni studies, and I see I cited it! I hadn't at the time made a tie to railways, it'd be worth me looking at it again.

There's discussion on here of what history is. As with all works on the subject, it's a history and part of the interpretation of history. It's also 80 years old. I'd say to anyone interested in empire, economic history or slavery do read it, but do read other things on the subjects as well.

The key point that anyone reading any history book should remember. History is a matter of interpretation and presentation. A history book can never end the debate on something.
