A recently scanned slide from nearly 40 years ago.
46229 waits to leave Appleby with the CME in February 1982.

The two youngsters on the platform could possibly be grandparents by now!

    Another scanned slide.
44 years ago Bill Harvey poses in front of V2 No. 4771 'Green Arrow' at Armathwaite.
This was the 'Norfolkman' railtour which ran from Leeds to Carlisle on 25th March 1978 as a tribute to Bill and his work with steam locos.
It was also the very first steam hauled train over the S&C in preservation. SLOA's Bernard Staite looks on.

The lady with Bill, did she end up setting the valves on various locos at Grosmont under his supervision. Or have I got her confused with someone else?

It was someone else. I remember reading about that somewhere, probably in Steam Railway.
The lady in the photo was called Margaret I think, and I seem to remember she worked with David Ward but I will stand to be corrected.

It was Bill Harvey who oversaw the restoration of 4771 to steam at Norwich in the early '70s and he closely followed its exploits for the rest of his life. Here he is at Scarborough on 31/5/89 on possibly the last occasion he saw his beloved locomotive. One of life's gentlemen.

You are thinking of Erica there. She also did some valve setting at Steamtown, as I recall.
You are correct - Margaret was DHW's secretary.

That’s her, Erica that’s who I’m thinking of.

A Ganger watches the Down Scotch Goods race by and disappear into the fog. The reality is the GCR and a photo charter with Tornado on a very foggy day

Nice one Alan:). Later that same day, with headboard now in place, here is the runpast at Appleby (in the days when we could do such things) on her last northbound CME before she was stopped for overhaul. 85-10-19 7 46229 Appleby run-past copy.jpg Happy days

.....unless your picture is of the second runpast, Alan. I joined the "photoline" myself for the second one so had no people in it. After all these years I prefer the one from behind the line.

It's 46115 not 56115. Mind you it's no wonder you hit the wrong key looking at those two!!;)
