The handout for the 1st April trip said that the loco was now a museum piece and so had to be treated with care; despite which it wasn't exactly a slow run - see post #421.
I was at a talk some time in 1967 or 68 by someone from the owning group, who told us that on the next trip (the October one?) he had himself been on the footplate and (I think, not sure) had taken the regulator. By then they evidently felt even less need to be gentle. However the loco was only about 30 years old then.

Mallard has carried a pseudo wartime black livery just before she was repainted ahead of the great gathering. I don't know of others - knowing Bittern, she may have worn it at some point in preservation!

Here is Mallard briefly in black on 2/8/12. She was never numbered or lettered and by the end of the month Heritage Painting had worked their magic. mini_IMG_6940 copy.jpg

It was to be nearly another four years before they had the chance to tackle the A3.

The occasional livery change is a great way of generating publicity & interest. I'm pleased to see SNG in black and, as others have mentioned, I hope it will be retained for a few months when she re-enters service. As can be seen from the shots inside the cab, BR blue will be the "normal" livery, which suits the loco well, is quite distinctive and (IMHO) preferable to standard GW camouflage green.

Personally, I'd love to see her as I first remember her, in LNER garter blue, no valences, red wheels as No 7:

If you're wondering about the box - after 10 years or so of use, my grandfather sent the model back to the Hornby factory for the motor to be "re-magnetised" (the Dublo equivalent of a Doncaster overhaul?) and this is the box it came back in.

My personal preference would be garter blue with valances, but I'm grateful for whatever we get.

Apple Green, Valances , the curved rather than the block black.
Dont mind the wheels being exposed but the cut out in front of the cylinders does nt look good imo. is there an oiling point for the 2:1 there or something ?

I'm fascinated to see the tender separately boxed.

Thankfully 4498 never carried the insipid Granny Smith.

That was normal for the first 2 Hornby Dublo tender locos - the A4 & the Duchess. I think the Castle was the first one to be boxed complete with its tender. However, I think this may be a discussion for a different thread ;-)

Yep, that's pretty much my attitude too. To my mind, the best finish for an A4 is garter blue with valences and chrome trimmings; followed by the original silver-grey. All the same, it would be nice to see on in apple green again at some point, if only for the novelty value of a sight not seen since before WWII...

What a superb workshop..truly worthy of the locomotives that are lucky to pass through it...
