How would an overhaul of a Class 117 engine or gearbox be different on a mainline registered example from a preserved one?

After the various BR works closed their railcar divisions in the 1990's, us preservationists were actually being approached by the mainline companies (such as First North Western and Chiltern) who were sometimes at a loss, asking which companies we were using to overhaul said components!

There are even a few examples where preserved groups have overhauled components and supplied them back to the mainline scene.

Folks would be forgiven for thinking there's a special set of companies or specialists doing "super overhauls" on components intended for mainline ticketed vehicles. The reality for first generation DMU's is that there isn't, the same suppliers are supplying both mainline and preserved operators.

Not solely, we did run into the Up platform on occasion. Both platforms at Wareham can be used for a terminating Swanage service.

The WCRC drivers sign the route to Weymouth. Obviously if an incoming charter for Swanage encountered a points failure, then I suppose it could be diverted to Weymouth.
However If there was a points failure at Worgret, The DMMU would not be able to enter on to the main line in the first place, On the basis that it would be the next train to depart Wareham, the points would remain set for the branch.

That all depends on what's in the area for Dorset Coast to deal with (and whatever SWR decide to do with their timetable in due course!). One of the occasions the Up platform was used was due to a charter passing through the Down road while the Swanage service was held, so there have been times that the points at Worgret have required to be swung while the Swanage service was on the main.

Now you mention that I seem to remember being a steward on that charter and seeing some unhappy looking photographers on the up platform at Wareham.

The up platform was used on the day that I visited on Sunday 6/8/2017 - maybe this was normal for a Sunday?

The best options is that a new station could be built at the sidings so the train can get right out the way. This would be better for brake downs then as the heritage train would be more likely to do this and it wouldn’t have to be toad out the way of the main line platforms. It a shame there never enough room for 2 lines like Eridge or somewhere else where ethics happens so they can just keep right out the way

    It has been advised that
Work on the shed construction was suspended for the duration of the pandemic and was anticipated to restart in January 2022. However, with late surges in Omicron and other factors a decision was taken to postpone the restart and to reconsider the plan to complete the work.
It is planned that completion will be in January 2023.

I was aware of that but assuming that there would be a lot of older stock that does have tyres still in use in some places around the world. Or was it only large diameter steam loco wheels that ever needed to be made with separate centres and tyres?

The vast majority of wheelsets were fitted with tyres, from my experience the most common exceptions were wheelsets for wagons.

Was it you who had the big win on the EuroMillions Lottery last week? If not, then I guess we'll have to wait for someone else to find the money to impliment this and all your other very expensive suggestions. :)

Any idea if 'unfitted' status was anything to do with that?

For some odd reason, that brings to mind an old image of a very heavy well wagon, with four multi-wheeled bogies, the outer pair of bogies connected to the inner pair with two thumping great "inverted bow" cantilevers. IIRC, it was a design for transporting large heavy castings in the north east ... something to do with turbines, I think. It was certainly by far the largest item of UK freight stock I've ever seen and about as far removed from an unbraked 5t loose coupled coal wagon as it's possible to imagine.

Finally!! Just found a (pretty indifferent) image:

Reinstate the bay platform on the downside. DC to compulsory purchase the industrial estate in Johns Road and build a new car park. OR reinstate the bay platform on the upside (newts, lizards and NR cabinet notwithstanding).

Or as Andy said the use of existing Wareham platforms worked in 2017 and there is no reason it will not work again in 2022?
Ideally joint tickets should be used so passengers changing do not have to leave platforms and a separate ticket office is not needed at Wareham.
But with so much paperwork, funding and other things to sort, wonder if it will start in May?

Small wheels, small tyres, low heat absorbtion when braking. The big worry is tyres slipping on the wheel plate, which heat obviously makes more likely (hence the splashes of white paint on the circumference of tyred wheels).

As mentioned earlier - if the imperial (original spec) sized bearings had been changed to metric then that would have to have been reviewed and approval gained beforehand - no doubt after much time and money spent on expert reports, etc.
So far as I recall, the original steel specification for new tyres is no longer produced in this country and the only supplier approved for use on UK main lines is based in South Africa.
I think it fair to say that trying to meet current UK main line requirements with equipment this old has not been a piece of cake. I suspect it has come as something of a culture shock for those having to make the decisions over the past few years when bureaucratic and other 'hurdles' kept coming. I for one am glad it didn't involve me.

I don’t think it was originally envisaged the bearings would be such a problem, as a supplier existed able to make them to the required imperial size.

The problems came because it was a very small order to a non standard size. So the supplier gave it a very low priority.

It seem a waste they spend all the money getting steam engines ready to go in the main line to as they don’t use it for that. The money could have gone in the diesels and making them ready so at leas they could run a main train.
