Why? The loco owners and the railway must think otherwise! ;)

    This bit I like!

Well, they do have a blood and custard set @City of truro fan, but it's only used for dining trains.
Besides what could be better for somewhere like Swanage than to draw the enthusiasts by hiring a loco that has never been on the railway before. :)

More money in the kitty me thinks! :)

I'll be driving back from Bournemouth to Swanage around 0600, so if it's helpful I'll post an update after that? It's certainly a bit breezy and damp outside at the moment.

For info, it'll be 34072 tomorrow rather than 5526, which was pulled from the last trip today due to a minor lubricator issue and investigation into a potential broken spring.

Is 5526 will be back in service by midweek? Planning to come down on Wednesday to see it

Roads were fine around Purbeck this morning, no issues at all.

Things seem to have 'improved' over the years it seems. For a long time most (all?) outside cylindered GWR locos were considered out of gauge for use on the Swanage Railway.
But, in 2016, GWR 2-8-0T loco 4247 visited - although was restricted from using the UP loops at Harmans Cross and Corfe Castle stations I believe.
It seems 5526 has no such limitations so, I wonder, are any other GWR outside-cylindered locos similarly narrow enough to fit?

Had completely forgotten about the 2010 visitor. As you say, 7802 had no problems.
It seems the 'little grey cells' aren't working so well these days, it seems, but I'd retired from the steam roster by then only driving on the diesel rota for a year or two longer.

No idea but suspect 257 Squadron will be available.
Haven't heard if 5526's current problems [possible lubrication and broken spring(s)?] have been sorted yet.

I've heard that 5526 might be remaining until around 12th April-ish so there should be plenty of choice of visiting dates.
