    Good to see Tangmere back in action with her "new" boiler. As built the boilers operated at a maximum of 280psi. I vaguely remember reading that, during the 1950's, all the Bulleid pacifics (both rebuilds and originals) had this reduced to 250psi, can anyone confirm?

    Detuned in the 1950s and at rebuilding. Still went pretty well and were described by the Rugby Testing Plant as the best steamers they had encountered.

    Thanks Al. With Tangmere now out and about I was looking at the leading dimensions for the light pacifics. The usual published data for the originals fails to take account of the lower boiler pressure and the nominal tractive effort is actually 27,700lbs (same as the rebuilds) and not 31,ooolbs (with 280psi boiler). In original form the adhesive weight is lower (126,000lbs c.w. 130,592lbs for the rebuilds). Culminating in Tangmere having the same (theoretical) "grunt" as a rebuild whilst being marginally less "sticky" (to the rails).

    This 'sticky to the rails' thing is more to do with how they were/are handled. The admission of steam to the valves is pretty efficient and if you don't watch what you are doing then you can end up with too much where you want it. And 'light' pacifics are. of course just that - light.

    Tangmere with a diesel in tow will be an interesting mix on the Northern Belle. I expect the tail gunner to come in useful at times and not just for heating.
