Here ya go Howard. It’s done in Oz too. This is a spare boiler that belongs to a 150 plus year old loco - not sure if it is original but you can see the chalk notations:

There's nothing particularly wrong with any of the above. They came to the end of their boiler ticket and were put aside. 6106 had a full re-stay (with Monel) before it's last boiler ticket; when bought from BR, it had a new inner firebox (1/2" stays). 5322 will require major work; it has a crack in the outer backhead, I believe.

So I believe. The definition of a "steaming day" is any day in which there is live fire on the grate and pressure in the boiler; I've often wondered whether that means a day after a loco is in traffic, but when the boiler is still cooling and there are live embers on the grate, counts - if so, you'd rack up the days perhaps a bit quicker than you might think, particularly for locos used intermittently. But I don't know how it is interpreted in practice.

And don't forget they are currently appealing for funds to carry out urgent repairs to the Coal Stage and Water Tank.

I was disappointed I missed 5322 when she was active last time round- her operational period was cut short by the firebox issues- I was hoping to see her when she was due to visit the NYMR.

That isn’t just a spare boiler - there is a complete loco scattered there in parts.
No 3 was dismantled quite a few years ago with a view to restoration to working order, but funding priorities have changed. I think it last steamed 80-90 years ago.
Sister loco No 6 (Neilson 1865) is operational.

It was my understanding there were two “complete” A10s although No.6 is most def the pick of the two! And that there was a spare boiler also, although the one in my pic could well belong to No.3. Ive never seen No.3, but I’ve also heard she is dismantled.

Am I the only one curious as to why the lining appears to be being done before the Green paint has been applied? Or is it just really weird lighting making the paint look grey?

the green paint has been flatted down to give a key hence the Matt finish, when the varnish is applied the green will magically reappear.

    Hangover? ....... Oh, right ... I just about remember those .... :(

I'm quite tickled to see the threads for Pendennis Castle and Flying Scotsman have spent a few days next to each other. Rather appropriate, given their histories. :)

No. Mr Brown was a Railway Employment Inspector. His report is addressed to the Permanent Secretary as the head of the Department. All RI reports were addressed in the same way.

To answer another question in this thread, the accident involving 6697 was around Easter 1977. I was platform staff at DRC that day and remember it well. I'm sure I can't be the only person who does.

That makes a lot more sense. It was just the way that the Mr Brown's name is right next to the reference to Perm Sec, in a way that in modern times ( ;) ) we might put our own role near or under our signature. Looked very odd.

    Thanks for clarifying.

I did not think that 6697 was steamed again after this incident. If so it must have been later than Easter that year. I was on the Western Envoy railtour from Saltley to Didcot and return, this being 4079's farewell tour before going to Australia. Here is a topical picture of the two together and the o-6-2T was clearly in steam. The date is 29/5/77.

Bingo @torgormaig : I was at Didcot on this day which was the only time I'd seen 6697 in steam and a lovely memory - thank you

My memory is evidently at fault, as the RCTS records 6697 in steam at new year 1978. I can find nothing about it thereafter, so the accident was most probably during the 1978 operating season.
