It would seem an exciting announcement is coming tomorrow, regarding the Trust's new home... 274711020_4860288777380808_2784195026765301834_n.jpg

Quite right, we don't want any new fangled ultra modern rubbish, but a classic Victorian looking design with the more useful modern elements sympathetically built into it. Hopefully they'll be able to equip this facility with all the bell and whistles you could want from a steam locomotive engineer base, such as a wheel drop and/or overhead crane.

That doesn’t look like the new A1 Trust works that I’ve seen at their presentations recently? The building on the left looks like the end of the existing Hopetown building to me in which case the one in the pic is the wrong side of the main line. There is a building shown on the master plan there, but I go forget its exact function - maybe visitor centre for the whole railway quarter?

This is what you need I think …..

As I suspected the building in your post appears to be the old goods shed and is intended to be the Visitor Centre.

I thought that. I presume if the A1 lot are vacating it for their new base, it will be available for some kind of new use.

    And here it is:

    https://www.a1steam.com/2022/03/04/first-sod-cut-at-the-new-railway-heritage-quarter/

All looks very nice. Am I understanding correctly (as I haven't been to Darlington since I was small) that the Heritage Quarter is based around the current Darlington Loco Works, with the A1 base on the Whessoe Road site currently earmarked? It looks like all new building, though. Has the plan to use the older shed fallen through?

Did have a vague wonder about what appear to be tracks through the garden outside DLW. I assume they won't be used, and there's disabled access another way?

Interesting. one thing about NRM is viewing locos at Rail Level, not Platform level, this facility should offer both perspectives.

I think Station Hall offers the platform level view of locos at the NRM quite effectively. Some locos can even be viewed at both levels.

This looks very exciting! And a £20M grant is certainly not to be sniffed at either. It's really nice to see local councils supporting something that should boost the local economy, and not just in the short-term.
What will become of Hopetown Carriage Works, itself an historic building? Do the A1 Trust own the building? It's obviously still a very useful place to have. And what about the plans for Whessoe Road? Is that still planned to be part of the new complex?

    Richard.
