Unsure, but I can say in some certainty 42085 won't be running, not being operational currently. Victor was the locomotive in operation last weekend if that is anything to on.

Thanks. Decided to head there tomorrow.

Hoping to find the last couple of coaches that I need that are based there as well as identifying the one I've seen a few times, but has no number, which I believe is 3881 unless someone can tell me different.

Surprised not to have seen any photos from last weekend's enjoyable charters with 42073 facing West. More to come in March!

And of particular note it sounds like 42085's boiler is finished.

Hi! Sorry to dig up an old thread but it seemed like the sensible place to ask this.

The 2 Fairburn tanks (when either is operational) seem to very rarely make visits away from the L&HR. I've been told, and read via a few sources, that the owners of these locos (and the line itself possibly?) are incredibly protective of them, do not welcome hire requests and have fallen out with many other people in the heritage sector (not over the locos, over other things I think?) and simply won't deal with them.

Can anyone clear this up for me - what's the truth? I can't believe that it's just that nobody ever wants to hire them. So what's the deal with the owners?

I’m certain that I rode behind one of the Fairburns on the Bluebell Railway some time ago. My notebooks are not currently accessible so this is very vague. I have an idea it was payback for some repair work on the loco. The entire L&H railway appears to be one of those lines that goes it own way and certainly doesn’t try to attract railway nuts?

About 10 years ago i applied to hire something from L&H (not a Fairburn!) and was very firmly told that "we don't hire locos". The item in question was owned by the railway itself, not privately, so that appeared to be the policy back then.

I remember seeing a video of fairburn 4MT 2.6.4. 42073 at a K.V.W.R. steam gala (not sure on the date either in the 1990,s or 2000,s) I remember seeing pics of 42073 at a K.V.W.R. gala seen as it was based at Low Moor 56F Sowerby bridge 56E and Hammerton Street 56G would anyone on nat Pres know the year?

I've got photos of 42085 in steam at the GCR in September 2009 and the NRM York in September 2011 so they have been known to travel from time to time.

The L&H is perhaps the most touristy 'tourist railway' I've been to, even more so than Dartmouth. Their whole business model appears to be to get passengers from the car park at one end onto a boat on the lake at the other end as fast as possible (18 minutes end to end) using a single loco in steam. Very different from the more typical 'heritage railways' with their steam galas and rail only day rover tickets. I'm not knocking it, it's a successful business model, but you can see why they would not be particularly interested in hiring in visiting locos or conversely lending out their own.

I’d agree with all of that except both times I’ve ridden on the railway it seemed to travel at a walking pace rather than ‘fast as possible’

Just to counter the less appealing to enthusiasts point, Haverthwaite still happily allow photo charters, unlike some other bigger railways and you can look around the loco shed.

afaik 73 has never visited another line, but 85 has. They are both owned by individuals, not the railway itself.
