I’m now lead to believe that the Ivatt and Met 1 will now be doing the shuttles and 43007,60019 and 850 will be doing the service trains. 30585 will be on the shuttles from Alresford to Ropley.

    34007 is more like it.

Can we have a flat top at the SVR pleeeeeease

Yeah it was 75014 in 1994 i believe. Unfortunatley it does happen, the B1 also being another example. To me thats looking like a new block kind of accident.

80078 did it a couple of years ago i believe although the damage was no where near as extensive as that on 73096

Just so we don't get any bull**** rumours, it was the core plug that came out and know one is too blame, it is just one of those unfortunate things. It is defonatly a new block job and at the moment, we have no idea to if/when it will be done.

On behalf of alot of the loco shed volunteers and staff and the loco crews, i would just like too say 73096 will be sorely missed for however long it is out and has been the biggest workhorse of the railway!

The rescue Class 33's traction motors catching fire didn't help either! It's a real shame that the engine is going to be out of service for the time being, it's a lovley engine and also seemed well suited to the line. Still I must say that the MHR staff coped really well with the incident and were all totaly friendly through the whole incident and the rest of the day, even with 2 locos down and a messed up timetable. On other railways when much less serious things have occured the staff have become very cross and unhelpful, and therefore I think that all of the staff on the MHR should be applauded! =D> =D> =D>

The MHR is definitley a 5 star railway and I'm definitley going to go again!

I wonder if there could be a possibility of borrowing a cylinder from 73156 until a replacement is ready? Are they 'standard' enough to be compatible?

What an unfortunate thing to happen to 73096. Can someone explain the purpose of the core plugs, and why they are able to escape? Is this problematical design able to be modified with a new cylinder block?
One would have to wonder about the future of this locomotive, in view of the fact it is a Bunch loco, and only on available until 2014. Let us hope it doesn't end up in a similar state to her fellow standard, 76017.

Lets hope the damage isn't too severe to 33 208. This is an exceptional assett to the MHR and they should really think about spending some money on the beast !

Same should be said for 73096... great loco - really very shocking to see the damage inflicted today.

... as I understand, the piston heads on many locos are hollow, and the process of casting them requires a small hole to be left in one face, which is later filled with a core plug. Core plugs becoming loose and falling out is not unknown, particularly on LMS engines - presumably BR practice was similar to LMS ? Usually the plug falls inside the hollow piston head and no serious damage is done. But when they fall *out* of the piston head, there is nowhere for them to go at the end of the piston stroke and something has to give - usually it is the cylinder cover and its fixings, but sometimes as here, the cylinder casting fractures. A very similar problem happened to 6201 on Shap some years ago, causing extensive damage to the cylinder and motion. The very high forces can easily bend the connecting rod and damage bearings etc.

I wonder what the difference between a 73xxx cylinder and a 82xxx cylinder if you get my drift....

Bridgenorth pattern shop might be busy...

Thanks for that David, makes perfect sense. Not having a hollow piston in my steam engine (not locomotive) means i have nothing to worry about. Thanks.

Metal stitching might come to the rescue if it is a "clean" break. Lets hope so anyway.

I was wondering about a cylinder block from the last Barry 2-6-4T, but that class have 18 x 28 cylinders against 19 x 28 on the 4-6-0.

Really sad news, comiserations to all concerned.

I was told that stitching had already taken place on the cylinder before the incident, so I don't know whether it would weaken the structure to stich on a stitch if you get my drift....
