    Thats bad news, and costly.

There are pattern makers out there who can produce patterns for items of this size and complexity. Phil Swallow's Bulleid Pacific on the SVR has had a new cylinder cast in recent times. There are some photos from 2006 on http://svr-online.org.uk Look in the "Picture Gallery", and near the bottom of the index, "Taw Valley Overhaul" and go from there.

I went down with my Dad on Friday and had a great day. We were out on #70013's run yesterday and only heard about #73096 this morning. Very, very sad news indeed. I hope the MHR decide to repair her and keep her going a bit longer [-o< Here are some pictures from Friday:

Really sorry to hear about 73096 - I have some really fond memories of this locomotive. Hopefully I'll have a few more good memories about her in the not to distant future.

Wish I could have made the gala as the pictures look excellent - instead I'm sat at home revising for accountancy exams boooo! Hope you enjoyed the sun today - I'm very jealous.

Good to see some pics of Swanage - she doesn't look that bad?! Hopefully the issues will be resolved soon and she can be out hauling trains again - another engine I have very fond memories of. She is probably the engine that started my interest in steam in the late 80's when I rode her to see Santa at Ropley. I remember being a bit disapointed with Santa - I'd much rather have been watching the green beast outside!

Well for sure - she isn't going to be running in the next few weeks! That Cyliner I would imagine needs a new end?

If you look at the side on shots on the MHR website, it looks like the rear cover has also been damaged. Can anyone confirm this?

Didn't 73096 have some works done on her Cylinders a few months back? Around the same time that she had her wheels looked at?

I've just looked at the photos myself again - Certainly looks like a new cylinder casting might be needed? Trouble might be with what has happened behind it. i.e the rods??? Does anyone know how this happened??? Anything to do with the Cylinder Cocks not being opened? Or for long enough?

Yep certainly read back - But does anyone know what lead to this actually happening? Or is this a common fault as explained in an earlier post to Std's?

put it this way, it has happened on 45231 and 80078 in the last couple of years but it was only the cover that went!

I can probably think in that case..... Which is why I can't see 73096 being back in traffic anytime soon...

Someone said about stich welding , what does that actully involve?

I guess / pretty certain that the cylinder on the 5 wont be stich welded seeeing as its in like 8 or 9 bits .

If you think of what a cut looks like after you get it stitched by your Doctor or at A&E, that is what stitch welding looks like. There are pieces of metal welded across the joint / break to hold the two parts together. As you say, if there are several pieces to weld together then this method will not work.

I suspect that as the damage to the cylinder block is so extensive that a replacement will be required.

    Dan

I would think that a year minimum would be the case, certainly this season is over for 73096 i would think. It really all depends on what options if any, are available for repairing the existing cylinder block. Although in my honest opinion, looking at the pics it would seem almost certainly that a new block will be required.

Looking at the specs for the new build clan cylinders they are 19.5inch diameter by 28 inch stroke, compared to a standard 5, 19inch diameter by 28 inch stroke. Do they share a common basic casting? or are they totally different?

If they were the same basic casting then a joint collaboration with the Hengist group would make sense to both parties. After all they have already provided a replacement smokebox door for 73096 a few years back.

A new casting block will be required - What a Shame after her stint!!! Although if the MHR have another possible casting or can trace one, then no one know's if she may come back soon! What stopped the other cylinder from going ? Was it all the pressure exerted and taken on this one?
