Yes it was, not sure if it being completely removed or set back to accommodate GWR engines with outside type cylinders as these western things and midland lines are two different things , pway will show us in good time.

Another update from the easy chair

The sun for a change came out yesterday which was most needed as I'd planned to repaint darley dale crossing gates, As usual the gates nearest the box get the most roadsalt spray from the spreaders and this needed a lot of cleaning and scraping down, coating with rust converter and a good repaint in white gloss, I'm hoping later on in the year before autumn they'll get another coat too, it could be sooner than that, the mesh can get repainted again then too. The piece of mesh near the gate bolt will get replaced soon and il overlap it to clamp it onto the other piece better.

The pway were also out which was fun for them as I'd just started painting the gates too, he hands coated in paint

Peter, Deborah and John were also about working on the telephone cables swapping over from the old exchange to the new loc which is ongoing nicely.

Yes, think it may be getting rebuilt with a slightly wider profile to cater for outside cylindered engines, time will tell.

More news soon, as I’m down weekend getting the signalling oiled and ready for the operating season.

bagnall 2648 “Dunlop”has arrived and will be utilised for the driver experience days, there’s a few changes to the timetable planned which will be put out soon from the office.

some sensible things given current oil and coal issues worldwide, run with less carriages where needed and as required, potentially some running to riverside only to save top and tailing and dates marked in the calendar for specific locos, such as 5333,d8,the class 25, 2648 running days etc but again this will all be put up soon by the office for you all.

that should allow folks to know what engines are working what dates, especially for the photographers out there, usual caveat of things being changed if locos aren’t available etcetera due to any problems.

so some good news for the new season and more, to come,

Busy weekend, today was the first day that two train running had been used since before COVID, the palatine was out on a dining set with the LMS coach and dining set and the service train was out with the class 25 before she goes off to the NNR gala.
, Dunlop was on the Palatine set.

on departments side, the pway have been continuing with sleeper works and such and my own side have been busy with painting boxes while the weathers fine, we’re also putting new nameboards on darley dale as the old ones from the railway first stating up there are now getting very tired, they’ll be swapped over in a few weeks time.

speaking of nameboards, thanks to Dave T and Ben R for making up the Rowsley Sth junction nameboards for the box at Rowsley completed last week,

loco wise, The other peak has started having its paintwork cleaned down ,an early start , Eustace is awaiting parts then will be rewheeled, and the class 25,prairie are running well.

    Afternoon All,

Sorry this isn't strictly railway related but couple of things i'd like to ask:

(1)Anybody know if there's a campsite near darley dale??? I remember visiting a few years back & seeing what definitely looked like a campsite near darley dale station, on the left side of the running line as your heading back toward rowsley.

(2)Is andrew briddon approachable & willing to possibly allow people to have a supervised look round his yard & take photos of what's there? Looks to be loads of various bits in there that i've been wanting some pics of. I'd be more than happy to give him a cash donation towards restorations of his fleet as well.

    Thanks
    Luke

    Luke,
Feel free to drop me a message through here to arrange. We can usually accomodate and prefer pre-planned visited (it's easier to manage than people turning up on spec).
    Thanks
    Andrew

Just a small update this week.

darley dales old box nameboards have been replaced ,they’ll give a few years service again till we need to swap them wood wise, the department continues with telephone works swapping things over so we can make the old van exchange redundant , we’ve been using the weather to get things repainted .

Dunlop no6 is doing well on pay and play and the palatine services, the deisel Saturdays sand the steamer sundays all continue which gives the opportunity to see the passing loop in use for the two services.

linesiding continues as it’s that wet, warm and green season again , the pway are still spot resleepering amongst other works.

Busy little weekend coming up for the railway, Saturdays as usual are now flush with both regular deisel passenger running as well as pay and play and also the cream teas , so the loop at darley is getting its full use, traditionally it’s no6 on the pay and play and dining set and whichever rostered deisel is for the passenger set.

Sunday’s are 5553 on the passenger set, Eustace Forth is due back into service at the months end so those can be rotated then too between duties.

this Sunday is a little different we’re also acting as the transport for folks coming to the Whitworth Jubilee event with limited parking at Darley Dale the car park at Rowsley is perfect for that and also wel be running a few empty stocks into the early evening for the guests at the Whitworth getting back to their cars at Rowsley so whilst these are only for the guests of the Whitworth theyl be running to Riverside as empty stock to run back to Darley ready to collect passengers, roughly 1700 and 1800 hours off Rowsley towards Riverside running with D8. (Note Riverside station gates will be closed up by that time )

the class 25 is due to go on its hols to the North Norfolk gala and as mentioned Eustace Forth coming back into service, there’s also Ixion up at Rowsley shed that work has started on the bodywork ,sanding down etc, next comes metalwork repairs.

on carriage side one of the dining set support carriages is currently having a good sand down, fill and then a repaint it’s part way through that and finally over the Sunday there should be a gauge 1 layout on display within the 1501 coach at the end of Rowsley platform .

    Very short update this week

7563 is out in Norfolk at the north nr folks deisel event , she looks good from what I’ve seen so far.

the s and t have been continuing their respective department works on the exchange swap over and shimming church lane gates, also some woodwork on riverside box

in the upcoming events list it’s the bus gala again ,it’s been a while thanks to COVID.

Next weekend sees our first major event of 2022. Sunday 19th June sees the Peak Park Bus gathering at Rowsley South. With up to 50 vintage buses on show in the stunning Derwent valley and our popular Steam loco GWR 5553 in steam its a must for transport enthusiasts. Come along and support us.

These regular updates on maintenance are of some interest but what is the future plan for Peak Rail? Is there still an intention to expand or have these aspirations had to be revised now the heady enthusiasm of the early days has worn off? The website has nothing to say on this point.

    Thank you,
    we like doing the updates

I think for the present given things like post COVID, prices of coal and oil, the economy etcetera were concentrating on getting the business side better resilient, we’ve seen this in the restart of the Palatine service...doing well, this will likely expand, we’re also looking at diesel Loco pay and play which has been mentioned by many alongside the steam pay and play, saturdays are one of the railways busier days now with the 10 passenger runs (5 trains out and back) plus the pay and play and the palatine keeping the signallers busy, regular scheduling of a particular Loco works as specific enthusiasts come for specific things.

we’re also currently hosting some testing of a Clayton cb80 battery Loco and there’s be more of that in the future, so getting the revenue up first before we make any bigger leaps forward.

in the interim the footbridge re-erection has gone to the planning proposal side so getting the sites up with more of a heritage feel and getting the water tower sorted will likely be the middle ground plans for the immediate future(next year or so)

extensions are nice and never far from mind however they cost a lot and need proper planning in to get them done right, so likely not really on our immediate list of things to do right now, but we’ve not given up on incremental gains as and when required.

    just my take on things.
