Test run action from today. I'm not a fan of the saying ''good things come to those who wait'' but that was definitely the case this afternoon.

Anybody know if the stock used is that from LSL, by the looks of it, air braked, and is it for certification purposes, later on, for brake tests etc...

The Mk3s are owned by LSL on a long term storage agreement with the SVR.
It makes sebse for them to use their own coaches for their testing, both with the Brit and now No. 7. It allows them to test the air brake systems as the SVR doesnt have air braked coaches to enable this. LSLs charter sets are air braked.

Will 4498 be running any timetabled services whilst she is at the SVR ? I won't be surprised if at some stage, someone requests a photo charter with 4498 and the teak set, When were the valances removed from the engines ? was it because of war time conditions, or did the engines loose them much later?

Valances were removed from the class between mid 1941 and mid 1942. They were not at all liked by the people who had to maintain the locos. The black paint arrived on each loco at the same time. 4498 lost its valances in January 1942, so it carried them for just over 4 years.

Read back up thread, the SVR can’t be bothered to allow photo charters anymore so SNG will have to do all its running in without earning any steaming fees.
The balances were taken off during the war to ease maintenance and reduce the instances of hot bearings as far as I know. The livery is not quite correct, it should just have the letters N E on the tender.

Not true according to the SNG Website:

    • "9th January to 21st February 1942 Another general overhaul carried out at Doncaster during which the valances over the wheels were removed to make maintenance easier during the war. Repainted into wartime Black with LNER on the tender.
    • 8th August 1943 A tender swap saw the tender from 4485 Kestrel attached to 4498 with just NE on the tender sides."
It would not however have had a double chimney in black!

Thanks for that, I've got a picture of it just post war with NE on the tender, I knew it wouldn't have been repainted but didn't think of a tender change.

afaik , only public services will be at the gala , presumably it will then be back to Crewe for main line test runs and into service

As others have said the SVR have taken the decision to not facilitate charters at the moment. They are not the only line and like every line they have their reasons which will only be compounded by the headwinds in 2022

On 1st April 1967 I think my father and I must have taken a service train to Crewe for the 10:50 departure. 08:00 will require a night there.

Edit: getting to Crewe by train on the Friday looks OK but, with engineering work that weekend, getting home on the Saturday evening could be tricky. A second night in Crewe would allow all day Sunday for a route home.
