Preston Services Luttermoller 0-10-0 locos

Returning to a previous query, it is certainly possible to run Luttermöllers without the gears. The Germans had some standard gauge Luttermöller 0-10-0 tanks introduced in 1927 for the railways in Hamburg harbour, and it is reported that during the war some ran as 0-8-2, 2-8-0, or 2-6-2 tanks due to lack of spare parts. I don't know which bits broke, but to my mind the story rather suggests that the Luttermöller system is nor particularly robust. These locos were class 87 in the German classification and had a total weight of 85 tons with a maximum speed of 45 Km/h and able to take curves of 100 metre radius.

The PSS locomotives represent a considerable contrast in size: I don't have dimensions of these but the German Army locomotives with the same 90 HP power rating only weighed 15 tons all told, i.e. a 3 ton axle load for lightly laid tracks. Minimum curve radius 20 metres.

When I first saw these locos for sale, I went trotting off to look at the geared system. My questions about maximum speeds and mechanical wear seem to have been answered. Another question was what sort of noise all that gearing makes. In that respect, can't imagine they'd be too different to the 'Shay' design.

Of course that wouldn't have happened if they'd gone for Moel Tryfan instead!

Gowrie is a fascinating project. When compared with side or front views, shots of the original seen from the back look to me like a completely different loco. I've honestly not the first clue as to how the new build will compare with the 'Spooner' single Fairlie Taliesin. Hope I live long enough to find out!
