No.7's wheels must have gone into the pool of spares as wheels/motion are interchangeable between locos 1-9. Yes, all of No.5's inside motion apart from the rocker shaft is stamped 2038. There is one spare set of driving wheels (No.1's originally) and some spare rods. I presume that the owners of No.7 's frames didn't wish to donate them and I'm not sure that the Railway would have any use for them having lain outside for so long. Personally speaking I think one can forget any restoration of No.7, cosmetic or otherwise.

Oh! and in answer to Howard's question from 2 pages back, No.5 will be turned out in Ailsa green with red rods. Talking of Ailsa green locos No.11 is scheduled to haul the late afternoon photo special on Easter Saturday as one of the Rush Hour on the Railways events.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

Thanks for the info Ray, sadly Tynwald's future is looking rather bleak which is a shame, all those years outside must have surely done too much damage for any restoration

On another note, looking forward to seeing a shiny number 5, what are the plans for her display, will she be in Douglas or elsewhere

IMR No.11 Maitland went out today on its first revenue earning passenger train since restoration. This was a Mother's Day Lunchtime special to Castletown where it is seen arriving in Steve Chappel's photo below. More of Steve's photos can be viewed at https://www.facebook.com/hrviom/

No 11 Maitland was out on a UDE ( driver experience private hire) on Sunday. No 13 Kissack had the service train C86FB476-951F-4B71-9925-04F1632120FB.jpeg 398912C7-1E18-4195-82F0-C6503F017349.jpeg FAAB3672-9BE3-419C-85B0-297BEC403D7B.jpeg

Given what was said of the No.5 at time of withdrawal, has Mona's overall condition proved better or worse than, or about what you's have expected?

Have to say I was surprised to see amateurs let loose with Maitland. I bet several have been salivating at the prospect for a while! :)

Mona's condition is much as expected - a loco which is thoroughly worn out with evidence of quite a few 'interesting' running repairs. The loco's external condition certainly deteriorated over 50+ years of indifferent storage. George and I are concentrating on stripping/cleaning/re-fitting the motion so as to be sure that no grit remains from the post asbestos removal grit blasting. Volunteers have been taking on restoration projects in collaboration with IoM Rlys. for many years. I'm not sure that many amateurs have been "salivating" at the prospect of working on No.5 in fact for the last 2 Saturdays it has been just George and myself.

OMG, whatever I've I've got is obviously contagious, the salivating was over Maitland ! ;)

Cheers for the info on No.5. Great blog, btw. Much appreciated.

Sorry Howard must read more carefully - senior moment on my part! The UDE (ultimate driving experience) is very popular and with Nos. 4 & 13 both committed to the regular service the 'new toy' is the only available loco for this or daytime special dining trains.
    Cheers,
    Ray.

Just been going back through the thread here Ray, I must try and look out my Dad's photo of Sutherland in Peel as I think he's the photographer behind the locomotive here

I unfortunately didn't find out if there was another side to that photo, but from that year I have found some images from the 125. From that I've picked out No 10 G.H. Wood in steam at Douglas at the same time as MER 33 in the Steam Railway station. Next up is the meeting of all No. 1's at Laxey followed by No.1 Sutherland in steam outside Laxey

A few views from the Easter Weekend.
Unfortunately Maitland was failed on one of the dining trains just before the Rush Hour events started, so the recommissioning ceremony had to be postponed until later in the year. The loco is now back in action with parts from Hutchinson fitted E202F46C-4632-44F1-896B-A1D2FD472361.jpeg 0C5C1A9B-8771-4A2B-80DF-8689C30971F3.jpeg 5BA17F9C-0F01-43A4-8053-7869CD0F8393.jpeg

What coal do you have access to on the IoM at the moment?

The coaling stage behind No. 4 looks like some kind of real, hard coal. Is that Colombian via Ireland, or some older legacy supply? Have ovoids or E-coal hit the Island yet, or are you still able to source the real deal?

Can’t answer that with any authority I’m afraid, there is a big stack of tote bagged coal available at the moment, enough to last a while. No idea where it’s from but it’s not steam coal that’s for sure :)

There are 2 piles at present, one a small 'strategic reserve' of Fros y Fan, the other has come via Ireland but not Colombian yet AFAIK. The latter is very smoky but hot and requires a very different firing technique. They did try ovoids a few weeks ago with disappointing results. The story I was told was that the fireman made up his fire at Douglas in the usual fashion and they set off up the bank only to find that the fire had almost disappeared by the time they were only half way up!

Thanks Ray. My experience of the ovoids is slightly better - if you make the fire up well in advance (up to 30 minutes in our case with a basically uphill line) things are OK, but things get rapidly worse on the downhill return; and you need to completely clean the fire after every trip - 22 miles in our case - otherwise your subsequent trip will be rough. I don’t know if we have done accurate weighing, but subjectively I reckon about 20% more coal with ovoids; and insane amounts of ash - which is IMHO what is killing the fire when the draft is off.
