    Hi all.

I was just wondering earlier, whats the smallest standard gauge diesel loco preserved in the UK? Our "Sweet Pea" is quite small, but wondered what else was out there.

    Thanks

    Andy

The smallest standard gauge diesel shunter i've ever seen is displayed on the corner of the A565 & A5056 on Derby Road , Liverpool. Look on Multimap at L20 postcode & you can get a birds eye view of it.

Thanks for that. Some of the Rustons were quite small. "Pea" is tiny, powered by a tiny little Lister JP2 giving around 20-22HP and weighing about 5 tons! Just wondered what was smaller.

Many years ago, there was a tiny loco at the erstwhile South Eastern Steam Centre at Ashford, which looked like it had been re-gauged from 2'. Had rubbing plates on the buffer-beam, not actual buffers, sort of metal dumb-buffers. And the coupling was permanently attached to the beam, no hook. Top of the cab was only about 7 or 8 feet above rail level, must have been a sit down to drive job.

I seem to remember taking a photo of Frank at Wansford with a buffer beam snapped in half - literally. Would anyone like to admit how that happened then?

There's 'Rupert' at Crich, which is a 2' gauge Ruston 20DL regauged to standard gauge.
