How many toplights are left, and are any in actual service? Most I've found seem to have been converted to camping accommodation.

At the moment we only have 2 in service. 3930 and 9055. 9369 awaits an overhaul, now stored in the depths of the carriage shed and 2426 needs a very comprehensive restoration having been used as accomodation at Hampton Loade and previous to that Bridgnorth.

I hadn’t realised 9369 was out of service.

Isn’t 2426 the oldest GWR carriage on the SVR?

    I believe so.
People often confuse 9103 for 9369. Same internal layout but 9103 is a Bow ender rather than a toplight. 9369 is in need of quite an in depth overhaul including door pilars and toilet floors. Unfortunately as its not a front line vehicle. It will sit and wait its turn. We have at least 6 mk1s, a couple of LMS and hopefully the 9th Gresley to overhaul before even considering 9369.

No am not looking for another one, have 2 already that's more than enough for me. In addition to the Severn valley ones mentioned there is also 2 mainline and city toplights at Didcot, one of which is restored. It was used quite a lot, running with the new Saint loco when it was first launched. These coaches are a bit smaller with a slimmer body, no corridor and I think a lower roof as they were intended for use in the underground line to moorgate so presumably needed to fit a smaller loading gauge.

As for others there is around 20 that have survived but most are ex camping coaches with the original interior missing.

If folks want to see more historic coaches get restored they need to step forward and get involved.

The below was seen on Facebook this evening; Andrew Barclay Invicta for sale at Chatham.

No contact details provided for those not on FB, so best bet is probably via The Dock railway asking for Phil Hedges

Hi mark, I am a trustee at the Whitewebbs museum of transport. A charitable trust, we have an electric platform truck for sale, open to offers. The Epping Ongar Railway are seeking expressions of interest for the two Gresley coaches that currently reside on the line.

The first vehicle is Gresley Buffet No. 24082. The interior was stripped by the previous owner before moving to Ongar, but hasn't been touched in the last decade. It was previously sheeted and stored in the 'tin' shed at Ongar, but was shunted out last year to allow other works to happen undercover. During the recent high winds the sheets have come off.
The second is Brake Third Open No. 43556, again has also not been touched since arriving in 2014, but remains completely sheeted.

Both these coaches will currently only be available to interested parties who have a genuine interest in restoring them, and will not be broken up for parts.

A spare set of bogies is also available.

For further details, or to express your interest in the first instance, please contact Michael Drew.

I've heard rumours of a very spewcial GWR coach body in Porthleven - though I've no idea why it is regarded as special. I take it this one isn't it!

If it was on the carriage register it wouldn’t be rumour so much as fact. Not every carriage body is on there. There’s one recently been scrapped near me not shown. No idea what it was as I couldn’t get anywhere near it despite trying, only see it through the trees in winter. This winter, when the leaves had gone there was no carriage body.

There are (or were) some Mersey Tunnel Railway coaches dated 1884/5 located in Derbyshire / Notts .
Not sure if they still exist, but have never appeared on the VCT Register.
I have in my collection a full spec for building these, right down to upholstery colours.
They would look very nice in the new transport museum to be built at Birkenhead, along with 'Cecil Raikes'.

Another vehicle for disposal at Epping Ongar, this time ex-LNER 'Trout' ballast hopper, number unknown.
It had been used until the arrival of the Dogfish a few years back; the doors will need freeing off having sat unused since then, but it is otherwise in fairly good order.
