Propelling to/from Holgate has never been an issue. As a general rule you are allowed to propel a train past no more than one running signal which is all that you need to pass going into or out of Holgate. The local Sectional Appendix also permits the propelling of no more than two coaches (ie POBs) between Holgate and Skelton Junction if necessary.

Mind you, if your steam loco has to do all the shunting this does cut down the time available for servicing and turning. Of course if you have aircon Mark II, III or IV coaches you need a diesel anyway.

Andy Taylor of West Coast posted on here some years ago when this was queried about a particular trip that was only at York for 2.5 hours. He said there was insufficient time to shunt the stock, turn and service the loco. I seem to remember that 4 hours is required but cannot be certain.

Yes I did although it does show that 54 years ago it took me two attempts to pass English O Level.

Two hours in York is not ideal, especially if you've boarded at Bridgnorth, though I guess that was the USP.

Despite the shenanigans with the diesel, it was a good outward trip. Tamworth to Barrow Hill was high 60s all the way, apart from the brief stop at Derby. Very good performance from the Scot. I'm now in the NRM re-acquainting myself with the Great Hall. Looking forward to the return trip.

Mobile phone footage on a windy day in Church Fenton as the White Rose heads to York about 30 minutes late.

Not to worry. I'm a little older than you and I sometimes forget how to spell quite simple words. Fortunately, we now have instantaneous spell checking.

Late leaving York. Apparently a Network Rail tamping train was blocking the turntable. 46100 is racing along though so I'm sure we'll claw it back.

That's not quite true. The Yellow Peril plant was parked on No 2 road where it was entitled to be. Access to the turntable is via No 1 road and this is kept clear at all times. However there did seem to be a bit of a tangle in the Klondike (Thrall) yard as unusually the whole train was taken in there which made shunting somewhat difficult.

Many thanks for the clarification Peter. I was passing on what the steward of my coach told me regarding the reason for the late departure from York. However it may have been passed down through several other crew members before reaching him, so a bit of "Chinese whispers" may have happened during that process.

It was really a very excellent trip and I'm looking forward to another day with 46100 on Saturday with The Lakelander over the Cumbrian Coast.
