But if it was posted on SocMed like we've followed the Barney The West Country, it would just be noise. Like all the famous moments in telly would be less famous if they weren't on one of four channels.

Expected purple, not mauve. Lining should be black and white. Maybe gold should be in there somewhere instead of white.

Not mine Knut, I found on this gent’s Flickr page https://www.flickr.com/photos/migrandadworabutcha/15359284324.
As an aside I helped rub down and fill its bodywork prior to its 25th anniversary bash in preservation in 1998, we found one spot on it that had every livery it had ever carried since construction at Swindon in 1960 right down to its original yellow primer, I didn’t realise the significance of it as a Yoof at the time.

From very hazy recollection Pete I think it was yellow primer Green first, then something like Maroon, blue, then Pres wise Maroon, DB, Blue and it’s then top coat of Green. Interesting to think that I was seeing something that hadn’t been seen since some bloke from Wiltshire had applied it in 1960 in the case of its primer.

Shareholder's Freedom of the Line tickets are to be honoured at the forthcoming galas.

To be fair, it's not made clear on the SVR website as I read it. Obviously a standard Freedom of the Line ticket wouldn't be valid at a Gala event. There was some discussion when the changes in benefit threshold were announced about whether even shareholder passes would still be valid, based on the wording being something like "On services shown in the public timetable". Galas are shown in the public timetable, but so are things like Santas and Ghost Trains where shareholder passes aren't valid. It was fairly quickly confirmed that the rules on passes remained unchanged from before, but I'm not sure if it was similarly clarified that a former silver pass holder who now only now gets Freedom of the Line Tickets would be able to use them at Galas (I didn't ask as I still have a pass). I think it's useful to have it confirmed that they can.

Spot on. Some enthusiasts might not like the result but there aren’t many locos that have generated quite as much publicity (mostly positive!) in recent years. Painting everything black and green and worrying about the correct shade of lining might be authentic but in reality for most railways it doesn’t put many bums on seats. I’m not suggesting that history be ignored but I do think that preserved railways and supporting groups need to be imaginative (and at times controversial) if they’re to keep themselves relevant in the 21st century.

Could any kind person please say if any of the gala visitors are likely to be operating this coming weekend and what days? Unfortunately I missed the gala and would like to visit this coming weekend.

4498 and 506 are a definite no they aren't - 2999 is staying till early June so probably worth keeping an eye on the loco roster on the website.

4498 leaves via mainline tomorrow for Crewe and 506 is returning to Mid-Hants ready to take part in their gala starting this Friday

Thanks for this - won't complain if 2999 is running as missed it last year when it failed on last day of the gala. Would have liked 506 too, but never mind!

    Evening All,

I had a day out on Sunday and went to the Spring Steam Gala on the Severn Valley Railway. Needless to say I took a few snaps and a feet of video footage and I have now started the process of editing and uploading the results to YouTube. So, if anyone would like to have a look, here are the first three short (i.e. between two and three minute) clips of a train ride from Kidderminster Town to Arley:

Hope they're of interest. Plenty more to follow as time permits...

    TTFN,

    Ron.

I spent most of the day on the SVR enjoying the sunshine as well as the trains at Highley. The first two videos from there are now on YouTube with one featuring the LNER teak carriages hauled by SIR NIGEL GRESLEY and the other showing the B.R. Standard Class 4 as it sets off for Kidderminster:

Here's another short clip from Highley; this time it's GWR 'Saint' Class 4-6-0 2999 LADY OF LEGEND. Or 'Lady of Leisure' as I heard somebody call her!

Re: 2999 ... Is the intention still to operate the loco in 'atlantic' form at some point ? If so, given the effort likely required to effect the transformation, would the intention be to see out an entire 10 year ticket in it's alter ego?

From what I've heard/read supposedly the GWS followed the same 'convertible' design the GWR created for a select few Saints, allowing them to be swapped between the two wheel arrangements relatively quickly and without too much hassle. Whether or not in actual practice it is so straightforward though, I'm not sure.

Plus I do wonder if they even have made the parts required for atlantic form, such as the bogie and wheel set, or indeed actually tested it during the construction phase of the engine, you would hope so.

In any case, certainly I do look forward to the day it's transformed, as though giving us a whole new engine to experience all over again. Be interesting to compare it's performance in atlantic form too, as I'd imagine it won't have quite the same pulling power as it's current form.
