Awesome images of the new driver's pedestal. By the way, many thanks for the polo shirt I ordered which arrived very quickly! I'm impressed. Readers, get yourself one if you don't already have one and let's get this loco built! (It'll take a lot of polo shirts but it can be done!)

For those that are interested the driver's pedestal was last seen in the paint shop having been primed and undercoated.
Meanwhile a start has been made on the pattern and coreboxes for the cast steel Firebox Support Bracket as this also functions as a frame stretcher. Images in due course.

That is a classy piece of metal - bashing, Brian. One of the most rewarding features of the new - build projects is the examples of manufacturing skills which still exist in this country. Your own, of course, are legend!

    Regards,

Should anyone be interested the pattern for the Firebox Support Bracket was completed today. This forms a very substantial stretcher between the two frame plates supporting the rearmost portion of the foundation ring. I.e. This large steel casting supports approximately 50% of the boiler plus the grate and any fire along with the ashpan. Photographs to appear at http://www.82045.org.uk/ shortly.

Excellent! Yet more parts for a super new loco - there is even going to be a Bachmann 00 gauge model of an 82xxx I see. I was very interested in the explanation regarding the failure of the Standard 5 on the MHR recently and the views of the SVR pattern shop showing how the BR type core plugs are formed was most interesting (as I am no engineer!) so thanks for the link.

Tony Massau has confirmed that an order has been placed with Accurate Section Benders for four pressed stretchers to compliment the cast steel one, the pattern for which was completed recently by myself. Meanwhile, having correctly interpreted the Swindon drawing plater/fabricator Phil Harvey has started work on the dragbox assemblies. These complex fabrications will fit behind the buffer planks to support the drawhooks and transfer that load on the locomotive chassis in a manner that spreads the stress.
Meanwhile work progresses on the patterns for the axlebox guides for the fore and hind driven axles. To permit release from the moulding sand each of these is constructed with a number of loose-pieces and cores. Photos to follow in the appropriate page at http://www.82045.org.uk/ in due course.

Today Tony commenced machining the cast steel buffer beam brackets. At this stage the plan is only to machine the faces of each bracket that mate with the frame plate and buffer plank. When we come to fit them the holes for rivets etc. will then be spotted from the corresponding CNC drilled holes in those plates to ensure alignment.

Completion of the patterns for the Axlebox Guides for the Leading and Trailing driven axles means attention now turns to the massive "Inverted U" shaped hornblocks for the centre driving axle. Meanwhile Phil continues to cut steel channel and angle in preparation to assemble the fore and hind drag boxes.

Brilliant! Thanks for the link to the update. More progress on what is going to be a really useful locomotive I'm sure.

The placing of an order for the copper sheet for the inner firebox and firebox tubeplate is a significant step foreward.

A realistic project that deserves our support.

And nicely underlines the fact that THIS new build will have a proper traditional (repairable) boiler rather than an all welded limited life modern one!
