I personally want to see the videos as the event has happened at it must have been pretty spectacular also I want to see what bit gave way first which might indicate looking at it now whether it was a potential weak spot which caused it to give way instead of the cylinder cover

I'm sure those videos would be useful and interesting - just maybe not in the public domain.

I think end of day the blue peter incident is on youtube so this ultimately if captured will be too... Who are you saving by not letting the "public" seeing it after all we know the cause of the incident

I think there is now no more to be said on this issue, it is now done to death so may I suggest that we we all wait until the investigation or RAIB is completed before commenting further?.
Lets leave it in the hands of the experts please.

    Regards

unless theres something wrong that he spots during the prep , then the only way he or she will know that the cylinder is about to fail is when he sees his cylinder rolling down the hill

There were no advance warning on this one. No unusual sounds or any rough riding, just a sudden big bang followed by 2 smaller bangs, a large cloud of steam and a large chunk of metal flying down the bank.

Well, you got a serious answer - there is no way of knowing that a PISTON core plug is working loose. Unless you expect the driver to whip the front cylinder cover off during preparation.
There could have been occasional knocking if the core plug had been striking front or back covers......

I was on the train as well, and I would say that's about right. There was a fair bit of lagging on the track which would indicate pretty well where the incident happened. That looked to be about a carriage-length back from the end of the train, perhaps a little further. She had five on, I think, so the length of 6 MK1's plus the length of the loco. 150 yards is about right.

Can I add that, in common with other posters, I thought that the railway dealt with the incident in a very efficient and professional manner.

I have looked up my sources and I need to correct my earlier posts.

It is clear that Stanier locomotives used the ‘box’ style of piston heads. This type of head is hollow and would therefore need core plugs to fill the hole or holes needed to locate the core inside the moulding cavity. It isn’t clear from my sources whether the box style of piston head was a Stanier import from Swindon or was indigenous to the LMS but all the drawings I have show that Fowler engines had the earlier solid ‘plug’ piston heads. Perhaps the GW community would like to comment on which style of piston head GW particularly Churchward and Collett locos had and have.

I was interested to read in an earlier post that Ian Riley’s engines have been modified, and I wonder if Ian would like to share with us the nature of the modification.

I understand that 73096 is actually owned by John Bunch and not the MHR. The loco is therefore subject to the agreement which the MHR and John Bunch came to following the big falling out of a few years ago, an agreement which, I believe, runs out in 2014. The accident to 73096 will present the MHR and John Bunch with a few interesting options. I shall be interested to see the outcome.

    Regards

Correct, except that the loco agreement pre-dates the falling-out. Not sure whether JB is the outright owner (my very old MHR stock book shows that he used to be a partner with others in most of "his" locos), but he has a "controlling interest", at least. 31806 and 34016 are covered by the same agreement, and probably 31874 and 31625 (can't remember for sure).
I think the agreement is very carefully drafted, so this sort of incident is probably covered. Let's hope the outcome is possitive for all concerned.
