2999: Lady of Legend

I’m seeing some fantastic photos and footage on Facebook of 2999 at the SVR. What a beautiful loco she is and a real credit to her keepers.

 

I`m so agree with you Copper-capped! There is several great videos on YouTube as well. Along with the Castle class she is amongst my favourite GWR-engines.
I will send a massive thank to all those who spend so many years to create this beautiful steam locomotive!

Yes, they're all beautiful.

 

They all look the same because since the Saint GW motive power made no progress at all.

 

It's a nice machine and I do think GWR stuff is photogenic, with the green livery, the brass and copper work and the chocolate and cream coaches, and this is from an LMS fan!

Not all the same. The GWR built VOR 2-6-2T’s are noticeably different.

 

So was a Kruger 2-6-0

 

I try not to think about them.

To be fair, one or two of them before that were a bit different looking - Dean’s experimental broad gauge 4-6-0 for starters …



Although deemed a failure and quietly scrapped, certain features were influential in the design of the GWR’s first standard gauge 4-6-0 No. 36, notably the semi-wide firebox design:

Conclusive proof photoshop is older than generally supposed? How the hell could any human being be expected to hand fire that BG contraption?

Edit: Interesting never before seen entry on the BGS Faceache site ....

 

It is said that, towards the end of Dean's time at Swindon, Churchward was doing most of the work. That suggests that Dean was not in great shape by then, but was he going daft as long ago as when they were still building new broad gauge locos? Apart from anything else, it appears to have far too long a rigid wheelbase.

 

I must admit, the Dean broad gauge 4-6-0 (or should it be a 2-2-6-0?) was news to me; I only first came across it at the beginning of April …

Perhaps identifying preceeding Nos. 1-35 would throw some light on the genesis of No.36?

Looks wise, that 'bogie Kruger' reminds me of a serious proposal to build a 'stretched' version of the 15in gauge Twining/Guest 2-4-2 design (i.e. Katie and Sîan). Whilst the undegubbins were pleasingly enough proportioned, the boiler (same dia., just a 'ring longer') looked a tad undernourished. The proportions of the firexox didn't chime either.

 

not difficult to see why Hornby haven't produced one of those given the wheelbase ;-)

Not sure what's happened to the tender, though. It looks rather flat -- is it 2'3.5" gauge, to run on the narrow side of mixed-gauge track?
