    Hello!

A question for the experts. I`m reading about the Gresley Pacifics and regarding the colours applied to these there are mentioned two sorts of green, LNER apple green and LNER green. I have never heard about the sort LNER green before. Does anyone know the difference between them?

    Knut:)

I think both Doncaster and Darlington Works had differing shades of green, with the latter supposedly being closer to that used by the NER, I think some Darlington engines also had their cylinder covers painted green and lined out.

At the risk of saying something that will spin away any livery debate into another score of pages.....

Can I say that as far as the public is concerned I imagine that green (variants of) for passenger locos and black for freight/mixed traffic locos is probably what would be seen as normal. Anything else would be far more interesting. So in that context maroon, blue and red are the liveries that turn heads.

Apply that criterion dispassionately and I think you will find that to be true whether it is Tornado or the Caley in blue or the Duchess in maroon.

Darlington applied a lighter shade of green than the Doncaster "grass" green.

Wholeheartedly agree. If you visit your average heritage railway which uses BR-liveried stock, or even Big-Four liveries, nearly all the engines will be in either green or black. Look at the NYMR - every single one of their locos is green or black.

Blue and maroon liveries do stand out - whether it's BR Express Blue, LNER Garter Blue, LMS Maroon (as far as I'm aware there's only 6233, 13065 and 6201, plus the returning Jinty in LMS red in the whole country) or G.E.R Blue as seen on the Y14.

It's one of the reasons I love railways that use industrial locomotives - you get some great liveries.

It was originally produced as an April fool's spoof for The Railway Magazine, if I remember correctly. I just want to make clear, in case anyone thought otherwise, that this was NOT a genuine BR livery proposal!

Regarding Doncaster vs Darlington green, it is apparently true that Darlington works would outshop locos with green cylinder covers. This was even done with 4472 when she had an overhaul at Darlington in 1966 IIRC. Her cylinder covers then remained green until her overhaul at Derby after her return from the US, when they reverted to black, and have remained so ever since.

I was thinking maybe the 9F... red and white stripes around the boiler and then paint the tender blue with white stars...? Original, don't you think? o_O :Angelic:
